This is going to be a very important question going forward. Democrats are experiencing turmoil in their own primary at the moment — as we have been predicting here, Bernie Sanders is catching fire and Hillary Clinton is drowning in her own sins. The Republicans’ nominee could well be the next president. Will they nominate a movement conservative, or will they nominate Trump?

Will Trump do any worse? I have my doubts. Balancing budgets is burned in the brain cells of a successful businessman.
Going forward it's an important question? How can that be when the question is based on a false premise?
Reagan was a PRINCIPLED Conservative. That is indisputable.
Donald Trump is not.
That's not a slam or insult towards Trump, it's just a statement of fact.
Now, is Trump appealing to the same voting block that Reagan used to? YES. Why is that? Easy: After nearly 7 years of Obama tearing this country apart at its seams, American's are desperate for someone to come along and tell us that we can be great again. In that respect, it's 1979-1980 all over again.
Trump is the ONLY CANDIDATE voicing that. He's also the only candidate giving voice to the things that are frankly pissing American's off.
That doesn't make Trump into Reagan or even a Conservative.
It does make Trump a very smart campaigner who understands how to brand his message and make it resonate. That's exactly what Trump's doing. Just look at how he says things today vs. 30 days ago. He's refining himself.
Demographics is destiny? Is that why Mexico is such a craphole; All those Mexicans?
A sterling reason to elect The Donald, stop the border crashers and save our Country.
Yes, Trump is a fast learner.
When Hugh Hewitt asked him the gotcha questions about naming leaders of terrorist groups, Trump should learn from Reagan.
When asked similar question during his campaign, Reagan’s answer “When I am inaugurated, I do not need to know their names. They need to know MY name!”

That coaltion was formed by the times we had just lived through, by Reagan the man and his vision, his love of freedom and in reaction to Carter. It lasted from the first election of Reagan and probably helped elect George, the First. The election of Clinton was the end of it and it’s never returned.
Further, Freddoso implies many/most/some of Trump’s support is coming from white supremacists and anti-Semitism. He treats the current immigration mess rather casually and I for one, resent the hell out of both ideas. We are not against LEGAL immigrants coming to America to become Americans. At least I’m not. I dont know anyone who is. And then he tells us people like me...are virulently anti-free trade and anti-Semitic. What bs. Complete bs.

One thing that needs to be kept in mind is this.
Reagan’s policies increased the tax revenues of the federal government significantly, because he put people back to work and the economy roared.
Unfortunately, he dealt with a Democrat Congress and they outspent the increased revenues.
Reagan did spend a lot on the military, but prior administrations had let it decay. He had to rebuild it.
That’s what I’m hoping for.
What the elites are really afraid of is that Trump is assembling something like the Reagan coalition that crosses party and demographic lines on the issue of the illegal alien inundation. The citizens want The Cheap Labor Express stopped and see Trump as the right wrench to throw into the wheels.
Agree 100%. Millions of libs and moderates will vote for Trump based on his stances on free trade, off shoring of jobs and illegal immigration. DemoCrap honchos should be very afraid. Right now it is only the Republican elites and elite donors who are browning their trousers. The weasels who have profited from traitorous free trade deals and open borders immigration policies.

You’re welcome. I am quite sensitive to rewrites of the Reagan years, and seeing how people try to game today’s issues with false premises.
My only issue with Reagan is he did not veto enough spending bills. If his veto’s were overridden by the democrat congress, then Reagan takes no blame. He tried his best. The increased spending on military (which was needed) was dwarfed by the increases in social issues spending.
So do I. We’re going to need them with China intent on ruling the high seas.
I run into people who don’t think we need as many ships as we used to have. I think we can think smarter, deploy better resources, but we’re still going to need a vast array of ships. Numbers count. We have to extend to all oceans, keeping the water-ways clear, navigable.
IMO, there will come a day when in one day our aircraft carriers will come under a focused attack. If that attack is successful, our strategic game plan will have been severely negatively impacted.
We must have a very robust fall back plan. If we don’t, we will be in a serious world of hurt.

I don’t totally disagree with that, and I’m not trying to put your thought down because it’s a decent observation to make.
We know that Reagan and O’Neil did some after-hours drinking socially. I’m not sure how much that is blown out of shape. It’s my take that in some manner, Reagan got what he wanted, but to do it he had to let Congress have some of what it wanted.
Reagan may have been of the opinion that once the military was back up to snuff, spending could ease back. I don’t know what his thinking was.
I’m not happy about the growth in national debt during his years. I’ve heard that he doubled the receipts during his years, but that Congress tripled spending.
There’s also the issue of giving him credit for the good and blaming Congress for the bad. Some credit or blame goes both ways.
We do know what Reagan advocated for, and he wasn’t a man to lie about things. I’m pretty sure he wanted to hand off a nation even better than he did, but wasn’t able too without a Republican Congress.
