If You Have More Than 10 Guns, Does That Make You a Gun Nut?
The Atlantic ^ | October 3, 2015 | James Fallows and others

Posted on 10/04/2015 2:05:12 PM PDT by 2ndDivisionVet

In an item after the Oregon shootings, I quoted a reader from Florida saying that if you owned more than 10 guns yourself, you might be considered to have an “arsenal.” And just now on TV I heard the British father of the Oregon murderer asking why anyone, including his son, would want or need so many guns.

Yesterday I quoted a reader who said, on the contrary, ten or more guns could be a perfectly reasonable collection for perfectly non-threatening citizens to have.

On the “how much is enough” point, responses from two readers. First, on the similarities and differences between “gun nuts” and other types of nuts, a reader argues that there really is something different in how gun owners relate with the rest of us.

Your correspondent argues that you can own ten guns without being a "gun nut", then proceeds to list an inventory that he feels makes his case.

Let's try to approach on different collections. Suppose I owned ten motorcycles of different types. Perhaps a cafe racer, an enduro bike, a big touring bike, and so on. Would that make me a motorcycle nut? Probably. You're a runner (I think). Maybe you own ten or more pairs of running shoes. [JF note: Over the years, yes. And let’s not get into old computers, or types of beer.] I'm sure you can come up with a better list than I can, but I can imagine shoes for street running, dirt running, trail running, training, racing, and so on.

Does that make you a running shoe nut. Yup....

If 10 makes you a nut, I guess I’m a freaking lunatic.

“there were only muzzle loaders and THAT is all we can legally have”

Then freedom of the press only applies to 18th century printing technology.

Handguns are easier to collect & store than motorcycles.

Jay Leno owns more than 100 classic automobiles but he has his very own underground parking garage to keep them in.

Anyway, what do you call someone who owns over 100 firearms?

Beginner!

What is wrong with being a “gun nut?” I used to aspire to that status!

The Army must have changed. I was drafted in 1969. At the physical they asked me if I could hear the ligtning and see the thunder. I said what? They said “yer good to go.”

I currently own around 15 powder burners and maybe 20 airguns.

I consider myself nearly disarmed and could use a lot more but right now can’t afford them.

If asked what my favorite gun is, I would have to say it’s the one that I happen to be shooting that day. They are all different and because of that each one has its own pleasure in shooting.

Tell him that by his "logic" then the 1st Amendment doesn't apply to digital or electronic communications since none of them existed at that time.

Or, take another tack. At the time the 2nd Amendment was written, it was protecting (note, protecting not granting) our right to own exactly the same weapons as our military had at that point. So it could be construed as to protect our right to be armed equally as the military...

Before the boat accident, I used to have more than ten guns, but now I only have a water gun, a nerf gun and the big stuff... a Red Rider BB gun.

OMG! I went to check how many guns I have and for the first time in my life realized I was a “GUN NUT!”

I have 2 12ga shotguns, 1 410 shotgun, 1 410 “snake charmer”, 7 various .22 pistols ranging from seimi-automatic to revolvers, a .22 Henry rifle, 1 .22 magnum Henry rifle, 1 “big boy” 7mm mag rifle and others.

I will try to get rid of them so that my number of firearms goes below 10 so I won’t be called a “gun nut.”

Whew! I’m glad I found this article!

I have over 13 guns and all of them have killed fewer people than Ted Kennedys Oldsmobile.

I started to agree with you, but then I realized that I can't say that for certain, as I own three Mosin-Nagants, and an 1868 Swiss Vetterli. I can say that that is true while they've been in my possession...

If that’s true then freedom of the press only applies too hand-operated, sheet fed, vertical letterpress printers.

He says when the 2nd Amendment was written, there were only muzzle loaders and THAT is all we can legally have...

So his opinion doesn’t count, because when the 1st Amendment was written there were only type-presses.

You got me there, too. I do have guns that have a history. I should have qualified that with “while in my possession”.

One is an 1895 Mosin, captured by the Finns in the Winter War and redone into a Model 39 in 1968. It still bears the mark of the Czar.

10 guns? Actually I have 10 guns. I don't consider myself a "gun nut." I'm a 2nd Amendment supporter and firearms enthusiast but... Actually several are not even in "active rotation" or use, being family heirlooms. In fact one, my Uncle's service pistol, I've never fired. I clean it and maintain it, but have no plans to ever fire it. It will eventually go to my son who, like my Uncle, is also serving in the Air Force.

What is a "gun nut" anyway? To me it implies some measure of irrationality. But what is irrational? Collecting firearms? Hey, lots of people collect lots of odd stuff. A guy at work collects Pez dispensers. Is it irrational to have multiple firearms? I don't think so. There are many different styles, features, manufacturers... Even having several of one style seems reasonable. Consider the AR. There are so many variations you could easily have a dozen and no two configured the same.
