I’d shoot both. The deer for f’ing around in my garden(s) and the bear because it will probably come back for my beehives later. Both animals I could process and can; win, me human; with winter coming up.

“Unless you’d like to explain what laws apply directly to a bear.”

Not being humans, bears don’t have rights but law could be said to “apply” to them in that the conditions of their existence are effected by the laws that relate to them. Laws like the ones that say they can only be killed in a limited number of circumstances, or laws that say they can’t be purposely harassed, for instance. Bears that attack people are specifically hunted and killed by government employees, bears that come into town are shot with tranquilizer darts, again by government employees. Both these things seem like they “broke a law” but just don’t have the right to a trial, etc. They have the right to bear arms, but that is a separate matter.

Regarding the deer: It’s not the bear would have legal recourse if someone stole his deer carcass. But if you stole the deer carcass from this bear, would it be legally yours? In Colorado you can get a permit to keep a deer you hit with your car but I doubt there is a process to be able to keep a deer you stole from a bear. So, he is allowed to have the deer carcass and you are not. That’s kind of like he owns it.

No, because the bear would not be in my back yard. That’s what the dog is for.

As to the bear catching prey, no, I’d let it be. Bears gotta eat too.

I was just wondering what your thoughts were.

“Bears that attack people are specifically hunted and killed by government employees, bears that come into town are shot with tranquilizer darts, again by government employees.”

That is just part of the government’s push to establish a monopoly on the use of force—never a good thing.

I have a 110 lb. Male Great Dane, small for the breed. He’s a gentle, timid, loving soul. He’d run faster than she did. Then I also have an 85 lb. Lab/American Staffordshire Terrier cross who has HUGE self confidence and drive. Given a chance he’ll chase after a deer to get dinner.

FYI, A bear in your back yard killing a deer is, by definition, a danger to both you and your family. If successful, the best will consider it a safe place to hunt. So, you kill it. That’s called self-defense. Period.

In Arkansas we would shoot the bear on the spot, (threat to sever bodily harm or death donchano) put the deer out of its misery, then put both in the freezer for some good eating during the winter months.

If you went out and tried to drive him off the kill, it seems to me there would be a good chance he would go for you and then you could legally shoot him but then you would have to explain why you were out there bothering him in the first place.

I have to explain why I am in my own backyard?

The bear is in my back yard, yes I'd shoot him for trespassing whether he is killing a deer or not! The bear would come back for my dogs ......or me! The bear has to die for his bad decision.

The backyard in the video looks more suburban than rural.
The video says it was shot in Colorado.
We have been having issues recently, here on the Colorado front range, with bears coming into suburban areas looking for food and killing pets.
A bear is not a raccoon, he can’t actually live and hunt in a suburban area long term.
A local man is currently facing charges for shooting a bear in a suburban area while it was attacking his dog.
I have to pay taxes whether animal control comes out and does its job or not.
If this bear was attacking my dog, it would be worth the legal hassle to shoot him, for a deer it is not.
Period.

Bummer for your family not rating the same protection as your dog, once a feral bear knows it can come, hunt, feed and safely leave your backyard as it pleases.

The bear is going to eat his fill before the deer is dead.
That will be noisy and unpleasant. Deer do scream in pain while being eaten alive.

He will disembowel and pull lots of deer fur off trashing the yard. He might even try to bury it and guard the kill for several days while he attempts to consume the stinky fly drawing carcass.

The bear will also be unhappy that your family is so close to his food.

Can you please reconsider what you would really do?
