In a scholarly article published in Teaching Education, Professor Cheryl Matias calls whiteness "a disease," while suggesting new ways to teach urban students about "racism and whiteness."
Dr. Matias is an assistant Professor at the University of Colorado at Denver. Her article, Why do you make me hate myself?: Re-Teaching Whiteness, Abuse, and Love in Urban Teacher Education, was published in Teaching Education this year.
In her article, Matias writes that teachers must address "normalized, oppressive Whiteness," saying that a "colorblind" society cannot truly exist in the United States. "Despite silently acknowledging that race plays a role in" achievement gaps, writes Matias, "the study of race, racism, and exertions of Whiteness are rarely recognized as a substantive issue in teacher education and the teaching profession."
Racism and whiteness are diseases that need to be addressed, she continues, writing, "We cannot even begin to address symptoms, such as the racial achievement gap, if we do not address the underlying diseases of racism and Whiteness."
There isn't even an argument that white supremacy exists, Matias writes, saying she won't even bother to prove the concept during her paper.
"This article acknowledges White supremacy as an overarching system of white Western racial domination, which manifests globally," she explains. "We are all operating under the system of white supremacy."
Teachers must examine their own "whiteness," Dr. Matias argues. "As the only person of color in the room," she explains, "I am often left with the pain of being denied a racial reality. Thus, the cycle of abuse is a pyrrhic victory, one where the pain and tears of whites override my own pain."
Indeed, she writes, "DiAngelo (2011) argued that white fragility plays an essential role in the maintenance of Whiteness and when unfettered, the consequences can be dire."
Education has been biased in favor of "whites," Dr. Matias goes on. "Teacher education - replete with a majority of white stakeholders who write the curricula, program frameworks, assessments, and standards - has permitted Whiteness to become a white enterprise.
“Worse yet, some white teachers and teacher educators co-opt and redeï¬ne theories ï¬rst conceptualized by scholars of color who were resisting the hegemonic oppression of Whiteness,†she continues. “In using their white ocular to ï¬lter out the most radical parts of these theories to ï¬t within white color-blind comforts,the essence of their conception is lost.â€
In the end, "Once teacher education understands how and why whites have become culturally white, it can engage in a deeper conversation of race and racism, move beyond guilt, anger, and denial needed to become whole-heartedly antiracist."
Education Professor is an oxymoron.

Sorry, this is drivel. My whiteness card has been punched so many times, I’m all out of guilt.
This is hard core racism. This woman is a nasty bigot. It is a travesty that she is involved in a teacher education program and that she is teaching anywhere.
If “whiteness” is a disease, I call on people of color all over the world to immediately cease using anything invented, created or produced by white people.
Most education master’s require no thesis, and most education Ph.D.s require no dissertation.
If a colorblind society cannot exist, then what is the incentive to try and create it? She hasn't thought this through, clearly.
If a white will be accused as racist no matter my conduct, what benefit does colorblind conduct bring? Further, what detriment does racist behavior bring? She is promulgating that she does not want whites and blacks to get along, but only if she gets to set the parameters.
That dog won't hunt.
I can write drivel like this with a random number generator and a list of phrases. And it will sound a bit less silly.
This is the SAME crap that Hitler and his gang spewed about Jews.
We need to consider the ends of that campaign before considering any tolerance toward this one.
What a steaming pantload of an article. I skimmed it after following the link and not only is it racist uber-academic twaddle it is also terrible written.
I feel like correcting the grammar in it with a red pen and mailing it back to her.
Whats more, this woman is an utter black racist who is being paid at a public university, probably with Coloradans hard-earned tax dollars.
I think some letters and emails to the upper level of that university need to be sent.

So, in the Progressive mind: Whiteness is a disease. Homosexuality is not. Gender is only a social construct but a being a proud, independent woman is a virtue. Islam is a religion of peace, but Christianity is a cult of death and persecution.
I look forward to the day when Progs are classified as varmint with no seasons or bag limits.

But, if we wrote the curriculum to her standards, people would be reduced to grunting, pointing, and eating grubs in a couple of generations.

So she is saying that "white" dominates culture and has shown itself superior everywhere on earth. That is to say white men have written the novels, composed the symphonies, painted the paintings, invented the inventions, dreamed the philosophies, found the cures and generally lead the way for the advancement of life on Earth. And rather than emulate the recipe of their success, she wants to destroy success so that a losers who don't want to follow the path to a successful life don't feel so bad.
It’s getting to be a very, very racist society, worse than in the early 20th century. One race is being held down by the Man. Not allowed to enjoy the same rights, kept from attaining prosperity, made to feel shame for existing.
They should be very careful about making this argument: if a majority of white Americans come to agree with this assessment, it would make a dead letter of most of the civil rights statutes.
