Holocaust documents trove unearthed in Budapest apartment

A vast and historically valuable trove of Holocaust-era documents, long thought destroyed during the second world war, has been found hidden in a wall cavity by a couple renovating their Budapest apartment.

The haul of 6,300 documents are from a 1944 census that was a precursor to the intended liquidation of the Hungarian capital’s 200,000 Jews in Nazi death camps.

Brigitte Berdefy, co-owner of the apartment overlooking Hungary’s parliament, said in August a worker detected paper after jamming a screwdriver through a crack in the wall....

Obama is saddened that some documentation of the Holocaust is found. He's part of the Muslims that believe that the Holocaust was fabricated.

This morning C-SPAN3 was showing a lengthy black-and-white documentary film, first shown in November 1945, about the Nazi concentration camps. Lots of gruesome footage of people who had died of starvation before the Allies arrived, also segments re-enacting how the Nazis had tortured prisoners. There were also liberated prisoners who were barely alive. Not easy to watch. This had been put together originally for use in the war crimes trials.

My freshman year in college, sociology class, we had a guest speaker one day who was a concentration camp survivor. She showed a film the likes of which I had never seen before and I can still recall images from it. She had a tattoo and spoke about her experiences. She was a child at the time of the war, but she was fluent in French and German and had blonde hair, so the Nazis used her as a translator, which is how she survived.

I seriously doubt they would allow such a guest on a college campus these days.

That invasion of jihadists seems to have made a change in perception in Hungary. The trickle in the Netherlands and takeover in Sweden has just resulted in a "blame the Jews" mentality in those countries.

Some years ago, maybe 10, I heard a Holocaust survivor speak at a college campus. She had been a young girl in Lithuania before the war. She described in detail her experiences during the war--I can't remember her explanation for why she survived (maybe it was just luck). She was Jewish.

70 years have passed since the end of the war so the number of people with first-hand memories of the concentration camps is dwindling.
