I'll have to find it.
Here in Michigan, you have to serve an apprenticeship for several years and then in order to get a bird of your own, you have to be entered into a state lottery which only allows two birds of prey to be taken from the wild.........
Probably where the Hungarians picked this up from. The Cumans in Hungary are descendants of the Tatars/Kipchak Turks who were chased out of Mongolia by Genghiz Kagan.
Wow. Neat. How do you know this about the Cumans, Tatars, etc.? Can you refer me to a book or other sources? Interesting topic.
I used to manage the military history list on FR and am a self-proclaimed expert on Mongol history, circa 13th-15th centuries :)
Will find a couple of reads.
l live in the desert with a very rocky yard....and have learned to watch the birds - especially sparrows and mockingbirds - for unusual and excited activity -- they get all fluttery when they spot a rattlesnake.
The sparrows perch in a large snake-observing semicircle and squawk, while the mockingbirds do the divebomb maneuver.
Our birds are directly responsible for two of my kills.
