It’s a joke to promote these scumbags on a “conservative website”.

I think that the song refers to the original 19th Century IRA, not the later 20th century splinter groups.

1916 was entirely different from the crap in the 1960’s and -70’s. IMO.

I enjoy the music, that is all.

Take this story and go back 150 years or so from it’s time

and transplant the setting to the English colonies in North America.

Sorry, don’t buy it. My Protestant Irish ancestors got kicked out of their home in Ireland by the Catholics. They went to Canada.

Thank you. Its disgusting how some Americans STILL romanticize the IRA and Irish Republicans and excuse their murderous terrorism.

Whatever the misfortunes of your family the history of Ireland is largely one of a huge, Protestant country, England oppressing a mostly Catholic one, Ireland. That goes back to the 14th century.

The song does not refer to the 19th Century IRA, because the song is about the 18th Century. It is about 1798, and the United Irishman. The United Irishman were a Protestant led movement for Irish independence. Inspired by the American and French Revolutions. Remember, Wolf Tone was a Protestant. The organized uprising occurred in Ulster, which the song refers to. The events of the year occurred in three phases. The first was the more ideological uprising in the North by Protestants, followed by a more peasant type uprising in the Catholic South, ending with a invasion by the French, Wolfe Tone accompanied the French expeditionary force. In the United States, we mostly hear of the middle phase of these events, Vinegar Hill and all that, due mainly to its Catholic constituency, while the beginning and end of the events of 98 are forgotten.

That’s correct. While Protestant Ireland has seen its share of troubles too, they don’t compare to the horrors wrought by Henry VIII, Elizabeth I, and Cromwell, among others. Irish Catholics were routinely treated worse than animals.
