Trump candidacy inspires Mexican immigrants to scramble for citizenship

Last weekend García and Reyes joined a growing surge of legal permanent residents in Dallas and elsewhere inspired to seek U.S. citizenship in an effort to defend themselves against the leading Republican candidate.
.
.
Reyes, who is 84, fingers yellowed Mexican documents that look fragile like leaves and explain life passages like birth, marriage and entry into the U.S. Reyes wants to vote, too. “I want to do this because I see this señor Donald Trump. He’s crazy,” Reyes says.
.
.
Arriaga worked the crowd at a recent Saturday workshop, telling them they could retain Mexican citizenship while also holding U.S. citizenship.
.
.
Yasmin Rascon, a 38-year-old Chihuahua native with two sons who are U.S. citizen, said she applied for U.S. citizenship because of the anti-immigrant atmosphere in the U.S. elections.

"With the situation, I thought it was best to convert to U.S. citizenship," Rascon said. "I won’t lose my Mexican nationality. I’ll have dual citizenship."

The U.S. offers exemptions to its English-language civics test and allows for certain immigrants to take the test in their native language.

You mean, come here legally?

Why?

Just move to California.

Illegals can legally vote there.

Is this a great country or what?

Imagine that! Amazing what can happen to motivation with a little fire under the butt.

Oh, I might add: fire under the butt works wonders with politicians’ motivations also!

The only problem with that is the motivation. It sounds like they are motivated only because of possible deportation and not for the love of the country that is giving them the benefit of citizenship.

So, how much will they know about the country and the sacrifices that have been to make this country what it is? Of course, they will probably know as much or as little as the present generation of high school and college graduates.

I’m not up on the requirements, but isn’t there a test they have to pass?

If you are an illegal immigrant, you are not eligible for citizenship. Therefore, these guys are not illegal aliens. Therefore, they could not be deported.

What a crock-legal immigrants are not the unwanted people-it is the illegals/mojados/wetbacks who broke the law that Trump-and everyone else I know, regardless of ethnicity-want shipped back across that border. And those legal residents should be offended at people of Hispanic ancestry being portrayed as so ignorant as not to know the difference between a lawful resident and a criminal-I know I certainly am-get off that plantation, folks-you are being used...

Yes, that is true, but the test is not that hard and extremely simple. It doesn’t delve into the essence of being a U.S. citizen.

That's the kind of citizen we need to make this nation strong.

What part of the following allows for dual citizenship?: “I hereby declare, on oath, that I absolutely and entirely renounce and abjure all allegiance and fidelity to any foreign prince, potentate, state, or sovereignty, of whom or which I have heretofore been a subject or citizen; that I will support and defend the Constitution and laws of the United States of America against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; that I will bear arms on behalf of the United States when required by the law; that I will perform noncombatant service in the Armed Forces of the United States when required by the law; that I will perform work of national importance under civilian direction when required by the law; and that I take this obligation freely, without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion; so help me God.” Anyone who retains “dual citizenship” ought be stripped of American citizenship as they have lied under oath.
