MS: Child with AK47 Defends Home against Armed Invader

Image from wect.com:

In Byram Mississippi, on 1 June, at about 3 p.m., a minor was at home.  He called his father to report a possible home invasion.  A neighbor gave this account. From wapt.com:

"Daddy armed him in case he was ever by himself," neighbor Rick Waltz said. "Daddy was at work and he got a call that said, 'It sounds like somebody is in the house. More than one.' Like any parent would do, he said, 'Get your gun and protect yourself if you have to.' Somewhere along the line they met up, and one will not be going home tonight."
The rifle that the father had armed his son with is reported to be one of the numerous semi-automatic clones of the famous AK47.  They are an excellent choice for home defense. While they are not capable of automatic fire like the military versions used by many countries, many attributes useful for home defense exist in both versions.

They have good handling qualities. Their overall length and pistol grip allow them to be more easily maneuvred inside buildings, and make it easier to prevent a disarm by an assailant. They are light, do not recoil a great deal, and have good ammunition capacity. In rural or semi-rural locations, such as in this case, over penetration is less of a problem.  Because they are so well known, they have excellent deterrent value. In this instance, the deterrent value was not sufficient. From clarionledger.com:
During the course of the investigation, police determined that Reed had conspired with the victim immediately prior to the incident to rob the resident at the home.

Police said the incident unfolded quickly. When the teen who lived at the home saw the alleged intruder, he shot him once with an AK-47. It appears the bullet went into the victim's hand, traveled up his arm and into his chest cavity. Only one shot is believed to have been fired.

There was no forced entry, Thompson said, and there wasn't a vehicle in the area connected with the victim.
The dead man has been reported as being armed with a handgun. We can speculate that the hand that was shot was holding that handgun, but without the coroner’s report, we cannot know for certain. The man charged, Samuel Reed, is 18 years old. The invader who was shot has been identified as Cameron Jackson, also18 years old.  The victim who defended his home is believed to be a teenager. His name has not been released.

Weapons that are used to defend homes are seldom identified in news reports.  It is likely that this instance will be added to the FBI Uniform Crime Reports as a homicide with a rifle.

Samuel Parker Reed, 18, is charged with capital murder in the shooting. The identity of the victim, a young black male, has not yet been released pending notification of the next of kin.

So...someone breaks into your home, you shoot him in the hand but the bullet travels up his arm and into his chest cavity and the intruder dies, and you get charged with capital murder? This sounds like something out of the 9th Circuit.

And the perp was killed.

“Why didn’t the victim just shoot him in the hand or something?”

Reed is not the one who did the shooting. He is charged with capital murder because someone died during a felony in which Reed participated.

Poorly written account/excerpt. Reed was one of the intruders so he is being charged under a felony murder law.

No. Samuel Parker Reed was an accomplice to the burglar, the 18 year old black male.

The unidentified AK47 shooter is the home defender.

As a Mississippi expatriate, my guess is this kid has known his way around that AR since he was a pup. he probably got his first deer before he got his front teeth.

Good shooting young man.

Sounds like the 7.62x39 has a lot more power than I thought it did.

No you have misread the article. The 18 year old who was charged also lived there, he conspired with the dead guy to rob the house. In some states if one of the preps dies as a result of a crime by being shot the other perp is charged with murder.

Always did. Doesn’t hit like 7.62x51 NATO, but it does hit harder than 5.56x45 NATO. Issue ammo for the classic Russian spec cartridges is between 1550 and 1600 ft-lbs muzzle energy. The 5.56 is between 1230 and 1300. Not to mention that a lot of Russian loads have nice solid steel cores.

No, he didn't live there. Both were intruders.

The 7.62x51 remains my preferred caliber, but I’ve been shooting 7.62x39 weapons for 20 plus years.Always thought the Russian cartridge was adequate but I didn’t know it would penetrate like that.I’ve pulled the steel core bullets and reloaded them in 7.65x53 Argentine,They penetrate like crazy at those velocities.

Definitely not an expert, but hunting experience with the .243 always made me wonder if the military ever considered it.

Samuel L. Jackson on the AK-47.

I'm sure the video is interesting...however, I refuse to watch anything with Samuel L. Jackson involved.

He is a foul-mouthed, virulently racist, Hillary/obama-loving limousine liberal, whose only claim to an acting talent is an ability to NOT stutter by using the word "Mother F***er" at the beginning and end of every thing he says.

And a thoroughly worthless scrap of human excrement, who, if he saw a personal gain to it, would travel to MS and uphold the low-life perpetrator of this crime and condemn the shooter as a racist slave-master.

To hell with him.

Feel sorry for the kid.
Hope he gets help with dealing with having to kill another person.
But he did the world a favor. That guy won’t rob or harm anyone else.

“Sounds like he had quite the magic bullet there.”

Pretty typical performance for a rifle round, especially one that is full metal jacketed. They are meant to penetrate barriers. They can go through a lot of flesh. Most rifle rounds and high powered pistol rounds can penetrate 18 inches of flesh easily.

Much depends on the bullet construction. Bullets meant to expand and use their energy quickly do not penetrate as much, but they do more damage in the distance they do penetrate.
