We need to eat less meat. Should the government step in?

Meat consumption in the United States and across much of the Western world has reached a level that is unsustainable, both for our planet and for our health. We owe it to ourselves to make a change. Our politicians owe it to us to enable that change.
The average American eats three times as much meat as experts deem healthy, the average European around twice as much. And the emerging economies are quickly catching up: by 2050, global consumption is expected to rise a further 76 percent.
Excessive meat-eating is partly responsible for an epidemic of obesity now one of the most costly social burdens, according to the consultancy McKinsey. Over-consumption of red and processed meat is contributing to the rising incidence of non-communicable diseases such as heart disease, type-2 diabetes and certain cancers.

Why do these things get posted here on FR?
What’s the source - WAPO or WACO or whatever?
What we eat is NONE of the federal government’s constitutional business. 0, zip, nada.
Let’s focus on the REAL problem and the REAL, #1 political challenge we face in America: GETTING RID OF AT LEAST 80% OF THE UNCONSTITUTIONAL FEDERAL GOVERNMENT and REINSTATING THE CONSTITUTION AS THE SUPREME LAW OF THE LAND.
Let freedom ring.

Excessive meat-eating is partly responsible for an epidemic of obesityNo. The main problems are the school lunch, breakfast, dinner feeding programs. It is well documented they cause obesity. Plus, the money on the EBT card is not reduced when the family is getting three full meals a day, year round.

Exactly. It’s not meat it’s the grain dense food pyramid. My husband and I are vegetarian after about nine months of being vegan. We’re definitly healthier, but we also cut out wheat. I’m sure that has a lot to do with it. That stated, I’m all for anybody eating as much meat as they want. You can be very healthy and do so.

"Unless we significantly reduce our meat consumption by about half across the West, by up to two-thirds across much of the United States it will be virtually impossible to keep global temperature rise below the danger threshold of 2 degrees."
Oy.

Actually, they WILL DECIDE what we are allowed to eat. Once they tie it to Obamacare and a single payer system and keep track of each American’s health, they will control the amount of salt, sugar, and in this case protein that we consume. And if we don't comply, we lose our benefits.

I like pork and most seafood and occasionally beef, if it’s in a sandwich as thin slices.
I probably eat fish 6 times a week.
I like fish and I’m not switching to soy or those other things that real foods eat.

Regarding meat, the important thing is unsurprisingly a balanced diet. One third of your plate or less should be meat, the remain two thirds+ fruit and vegetables.

Corrections, insights welcome.

Absolutely the government should step in. All food and the means of food production should be expropriated by the state and rationed out to the population under the guidance of Party experts who will not only see that people will eat right, but that the right people will eat. We can do for America what we did for Zimbabwe!
You can't even satirize this stuff.

Laugh, scorn, laugh, mock, it's fun!
