Banning those that have been bred and raised for aggression is one thing. Pit Bulls aren’t all aggressive, potential killers, though. Quite a few are decent, loving pets. I hope they’ve at least provided for grandfathering the decent dogs.

Absolutely. Even the HOA in my last neighborhood banned them.

A lot of blacks own pit bulls. I know drug dealers like them.

Look at any prisoner's pictures and almost all the dogs you see will be pit bulls.

Of course. But people who already live in the city and already have a pit bull should be allowed to keep it, leashed or fenced at all times, unless there's even one problem with it.

It's up to the local government to write the rules. It's up to the people who live there to follow them.

Around here, the only registration of dogs is at the country level. It's pretty astounding that local officials don't even have a registry of what dogs reside here.

While we're at it, let's ban German Shepherds as well.

Probably a good idea to throw out the Golden Retrievers.

And of course, Rottweilers:

Rottweilers Called Deadliest Dogs

I just don't think the problem is breed specific. If you're going to ban dogs, I suppose banning "big, strong, dogs" of any breed is the way you really have to go.

Allowing a bunch of bureaucrats to force dangerous animals onto localities who don’t want them is a paradigm of what’s wrong with this country.

Yes, and speaking of muslims ...

“Yes - Pit bulls were bred for fighting and killing. In my opinion, the breed needs to become extinct.”

Just exactly what my vet said, except he added that most of the type of people who own these dogs have similiar aggressive and anti-social personalities as their pit bulls do.

You shot a drug dealer’s dog??? I’m impressed!

I take it your work at that place was finished when you did the deed...

I don’t think it should necessarily be breed-specific, not that there is any such pure breed of “pit bull” (and therefore not breed-specific to begin with).

But if you are attacking the right of local or state governments or local HOAs to protect its citizenry with the consent of their local constituencies, you’re making the wrong argument.

Quite a few are decent, loving pets.

My aunt had one of those many years ago. The first time I brought my daughter to her house when she was 3 years old, the dog took one look at her and immediately went after her. The dog was quickly put outside, but every time he saw my daughter through the glass, he went after her. After that, the dog was always put outside before we came in the house. Other than the bizarre reaction to my daughter, the dog was absolutely wonderful, and never hurt anyone.

I'm so thankful that pit bull didn't get to my little girl. I'm so thankful I'm not one of those people who said "he was such a loving and wonderful pet, I just don't understand what happened", as my child lay in a hospital bed like the one in post 21, or worse. Pit bulls are wonderful, until they are not.

Most dog bites are a warning; leave me alone or get away from my toy/food/owner. Pit bulls are trying to kill.

I have seen some that were quite nice too. Statistics are however, uniformly bad.

2014 dog bite fatality statistics
42 U.S. dog bite-related fatalities occurred in 2014. Despite being regulated in Military Housing areas and over 700 U.S. cities, pit bulls contributed to 64% (27) of these deaths. Pit bulls make up about 6% of the total U.S. dog population.2
Together, pit bulls (27) and rottweilers (4), the second most lethal dog breed, accounted for 74% of the total recorded deaths in 2014. This same combination also accounted for 74% of all fatal attacks during the 10-year period of 2005 to 2014.

Once you get past some of the mastiffs, etc, the other breeds added together comprise 2%.

I’ve had numerous dobes, GSD and Malinois, all were good with kids, even though some were aggressive protection dogs. As a precaution, if I’m out in public (where there are plenty of idiots) I muzzle my Mal, just because. I don’t think she’d bite without instruction, or protecting property, but it isn’t worth the risk even a tiny risk.

The crazy thing is if you muzzle one, people are scared to death of it!

Even Bill Clinton went along with welfare reform — after vetoing it at least twice. It was a huge success (but later rolled back by Obama). Now BJ claims credit for it, as though it were his idea.

Hillary, though, is not a practical politician. She is much more of an ideologue.

I'm not. I mentioned in my post #6, that any local government should have the ability to pass such ordinances. The local level is where the people have the most voice and is therefore the most appropriate level where things like this can be debated.

The same goes for HOA's. Heck, some HOA's ban swimming pools and swimming pools. If you know the rules going in, they can pass whatever they want.

I don't believe there should be much, if any, control at the state level though, unless there is some sort of provision in the state constitution affording them legislative power over pet ownership. If not, the concept of limited government should apply at the state level and these decisions should be left to individual localities. The state should have no business telling a municipality what they can and can't pass unless it is in direct violation of the state constitution or is a specific duty assigned to them by the U.S. Constitution.

I do not support bans that would be applied retroactively to existing pet owners however. At least those that would force them to move or give up their pets.

Are you ethically challenged?

“According to the policy statement published by Pediatrics on February 23, 2010, more than 10,000 children under the age of 14 go to the emergency room each year after choking on food and approximately 77 of them die. Seventeen percent of those children, or more than 13 children per year, choke to death on hot dogs.”

You say “I’m not” but then go on to contradict yourself.

You need to get someone to proofread your posts.

Little kids may shoot them too, under adult supervision.

2014 dog bite fatality statistics

Not a big fan of HuffPo, but I found this to be an interesting and thought-provoking read on how dog bite statistics are compiled. HuffPo is "claiming" that these stats are based off of media reports found online.

I don't know whether they are or not. But I'm always skeptical of topics like this that receive extensive media coverage.
