from joni mitchell's album "clouds" (1969).
"Songs on the album feature unconventional, subtle harmonies, particularly "Songs to Aging Children Come", which employs chromatic harmonies." (wikipedia)
the song was used in cover form in the movie "alice's restaurant" (1969).
True, but she admits it. In fact, that self-realization lead to many of her better songs. I bought Song to a Seagull when it fist came out in 1968. I was 18 and working at a marina near Annapolis. That was a magic summer. At times her metaphors remind me a little of Thomas Hardy. There is some song, I don't recall which, where she sings of a man who spends his days working "with his legs beneath a desk of un-fruited wood." Excellent!
I’m fortunate to have a “dry” version of the album “Blue” burned direct from the raw studio tapes before the dreaded reverb was added. “Last Time I Saw Richard” sounds crystal clear and amazing.
My favorite cover of a Joni song is Diana Krall - “A Case of You”. The live version from her “Paris concert is truly the definitive version and far surpasses Joni’s.

ps: the DVD version of the concert is from a different night and not as good as the CD version of the album.
Thanks, a wonderful new (to me) interpretation of a great song.
Supposedly, the song is about Leonard Cohen? who died last week?
Me too, that was a great impression.
imho she has to have had that canned and ready to serve to the first interviewer who she felt comfortable could handle it well (as this guy seemed to). i know she comes down hard on lousy interviewers. she is not dumb and there are a lot of dumb journalists (gasp), even in music.
i have heard her dish out criticism of other musicians’ music but i am having a difficult time recalling any other musicians criticizing her music. i wonder if i should be bold again and state that i don’t think there are any*. if that is true, it might be worth thinking about for those who want to toss (metaphorically) stones at her.
* of course i can always have missed something somewhere
Yes, I have listened to Blue countless times as well. I saw Joni in 1999, accompanied by Herbie Hancock. Her voice was frail but still sweet. A magic evening.
I grew up in Stockbridge MA, knew some of the “extras” on the movie set of Alice’s Restaurant, and was even arrested once for speeding in 1967 by Officer Obie who played himself in the movie. Nice guy. That song was so effective and perfect in that movie for many reasons.
She goes way back with the other excellent moonbat Canadian artist, Neil young.
Yep. “Court and Spark” was my first and favorite album.
Don't forget Lyle Mays.
That is a great set, every song.
Ha. Since you were in the area back then, wonder if by chance you caught James Taylor’s free concert in Amherst in 1969.
The summer of ‘67 was my last summer in Stockbridge. Then we moved to a coastal town in SE Massachusetts. I did not catch Taylor’s Amherst concert, sadly.
I’ve seen Arlo Guthrie perform twice and James Taylor once. They were very good. One of my brother’s in law is an actor in community theatre and was able to get us tickets somehow. Fortunately, he and his family have moved to Florida.
I have a few of Diana Krall’s albums. She’s great.
Thank you! I just put them in the cart. :)
That’s where I ended up! Those cold MA winters were too much!
