President-elect Donald Trump, who spent the weekend engaged in a war of words with civil rights activist and U.S. Rep. John Lewis (D-Ga.), met Monday with Martin Luther King III to discuss voting rights.

The Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.’s eldest son walked into Trump Tower at 12:51 p.m. with a handful of colleagues affiliated with the Drum Major Institute, a progressive public policy think tank where he is president.

“Today, President-elect Trump is going to sit down with Martin Luther King III and others in New York and have a conversation about voting, about bringing more people into the system, the legacy of Dr. King and how we can continue to pursue that under the Trump administration,” Trump spokesman Sean Spicer said on NBC’s “Today” show Monday.

The private session at Trump Tower with civil rights advocates, on the same day the nation is honoring the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday, represents a mix of symbolism and substance. King III has campaigned for years to establish a form of free government photo identification that could make it easier for Americans who lack a driver’s license or other official ID to cast ballots. He and the other attendees, including the Rev. James A. Forbes, have urged Trump to endorse the idea of making such identification free.

Given the difficulty to get an Obama birth certificate, how can we expect people to verify their identities? /s

Just imagine what implementing this idea, would do in CA if the implementation was coupled with a requirement that every ID that was valid for voting could only be issued to citizens who proved their citizenship as a requirement for getting that ID. A million illegals would immediately disappear from the election rolls and CA,would again belong to Americans. Great idea, MLK III; let’s hope you and President Trup implement it.

Well according to the left, there are no illegal immigrants voting. So they shouldn’t have an objection and then we will know for sure.

If they gave voters a photo ID that claim they can’t afford to get one on their own, of which I doubt there are many, but then demanded that states do not allow same day registration and make all voters show ID when voting, that may not be so bad. Also, in states that give illegals drivers licenses, this would not be allowed as ID. I would also say that anyone that already has a license or other photo ID is not eligible for the free additional one.

Love your humor. It’s great to live here in TN where getting photo ID that’s valid for voting requires proof of citizenship. I was really glad to be required to provide a copy of my passport to renew my CCW permit.

Because it’s MLK’s birthday holiday, because it deflects from the John Lewis flap and makes Lewis look bad, because it’s politically astute of Trump to do so, that’s why. Think.

Trump once again demonstrates that he's the smartest man in the room.

There's already a thread over at DU asking of MLK III, "why is he doing this?" in regards to meeting with Trump, pissed that he's taking all the wind out of their sails over the Lewis brouhaha.

He needs to tell MLK III what he's going to do to stop harmful immigration policies.

I doubt that Trump passed up an opportunity to tell these folks he wants to improve the lives of Black people in the United States, in healthy ways.

Black leaders understand the competition for low paying jobs, and I think they see a guy in Trump that is going to be working for US citizens first, whether they are White, Black, Brown, or green.

I think they believe him, and I do not think they are going to turn their backs on him, as he follows through.

King III going there today telegraphs a pretty strong message IMO. He trusts Trump to come through for Blacks.

I’m glad he went, and I respect that.
