Emotional association. "Buy this product and you'll feel better about yourself as a righteous person standing tall against bigotry." It's the sort of thing they resort to when "Buy this because it's a good product" isn't sufficient and sometimes isn't even true.
What it actually means is "We can manipulate you into buying this product because you're a gullible fool," but they get in trouble if they make that too obvious. FReepers of a certain age may recall the entire thing being beautifully satirized in the old Joe Isuzu ad campaigns. Here was a guy who was lying, everybody knew he was lying, they even printed "He's lying" on the bottom of the screen, and it was a successful campaign because everybody knew that the other commercials were lying just as hard.
The flip side to that is blowback, as in this case. But a lot of advertisers live in the same sort of rarified cultural air that Big Media do (well, they are Big Media to be accurate) and march on blissfully unaware that the cause they're flogging is not as popular as they've been led to believe. A good agency will focus group these things with sample wide enough to warn the customer that this is likely to happen, a cheap one (or one internal to the vendor because that's cheaper still) won't. Somebody kind ought to have taken the Dove management aside and informed them that boys in girls' dressing rooms isn't really something to try to hang the quarterly sales report on. (CoughcoughcoughTARGETcoughcough...)

Even without the transgender “mom,” it’s really a stupid ad. If that’s the best that comes out of Madison Avenue these days, well, they’re not going to be selling a lot of Dove products. It sort of reminds me of Saturday Night Live: stupid, weird, lame, retarded, gay, very low energy.

My most recent magazines are running ikea ads that have two male homosexuals in them. I will never understand why businesses love catering to a lot less than 1% of the population.
Since his wife went through the pregnancy and birth, does he say he did too? How would someone be able to deal with their husband acting in that way? Get him some help, for the sake of your marriage and child.
Store brand mayo here tastes just fine and is a dollar cheaper than Hellmann’s.
Make your own mayo for less than half the cost of Hellmann’s:
1 egg yolk
1 T vinegar
1 t lemon juice
1/2 t salt
1 squirt of mustard
wee bit of sugar
1 C veg oil
SLOWLY dribble the oil into the other ingredients. Whisk, dribble, whisk, dribble, whisk until it turns into mayo. Makes about a cup. Store in fridge.
You would think they would at least try to find a more attractive Mentally Ill Transgender for that Ad.
Even the Ads out there featuring Gays and Lesbos attempt to use attractive People, just like most “NORMAL” Ads do.

The male/female breasts are exactly identical and many cases are on record of males breastfeeding children.
If the male has some breast growth due to estrogen usage then it’s quite easily done and the milk production can be high. (8oz daily or more)
The breasts are a vestigial body part that all males have, females have all male vestigial parts as well...yup, even a vestigial prostate gland...once in a while a female falls victim to prostate cancer (they NEVER describe it as such but say Bladder Cancer..otherwise far too traumatic)
Breastfeeding is a hormonal dance mostly of Prolactin and Oxytocin. Males and females can instantly release Oxytocin by stimulating the nipples. This causes what is known as the letdown response and if milk is available it can start leaking from the breasts...in some simply hearing a baby cry releases Oxytocin and the letdown begins.
Women who adopt can begin milk production in a few weeks simply by stimulating the nipples, either with the infant or a breast-pump.
Males, especially those with some breast growth can do the same.
