.223 Used to Rescue Relatives Next Door, two Invaders Shot, 1 Killed
Gun Watch ^ | 12 May, 2017 | Dean Weingarten

On 9 May, 2017, a Houston family underwent a home invasion nightmare. Sometime in the early morning hours, twin 19 year old brothers woke to their parents screaming while being beat and held hostage by four armed home invaders. The stories do not say exactly what the four invaders were armed with. At least one had a pistol, because the father and the twins were "pistol whipped". The mother and 10 year old sister were held hostage.  The robbers demanded jewelry and money. From khou.com:
HOUSTON – A man came to the rescue when his relatives next door were tied up and assaulted during a home invasion in northeast Houston overnight.

Houston Police Department officers responded around 4 a.m. Tuesday to a call of a burglary in progress at a home in the 3700 block of Crandon Street.

“They had my little sister at gunpoint, so we couldn’t do anything,” said 19-year old Rene Garcia.

He and his twin brother tried to lock themselves inside their bedroom when they heard their mom and dad screaming and struggling. At least one gunman threatened to shoot a family member if Rene and his brother didn’t open their bedroom door, Garcia said.
The uncle, who lives next door, heard the screaming and came to the rescue. Some accounts say that the Uncle came across an invader beating a family member in the back yard; another says that the Uncle broke into the house and shot the invaders. The presence of three .223 steel casings in the driveway indicates shots were fired before the Uncle entered the house, if he did.

We do not have information about what model of gun the Uncle used. The pictures of the casings are indicative it was a .223 semi-auto.

Until more details are revealed, it will not be clear that a .223 semi-auto was used to rescue his family from the home invaders.

One of the reasons that instances of defensive uses of semi-auto rifles are not documented more often is that reporters are ignorant of firearm models and calibers.

Numerous reporters were on the scene. They took excellent photographs of the shell casings.

Several stories have been published about the incident. Not one mentions the caliber of casings seen in the pictures.

Crime Scene Markers of Shell Casings in the Driveway
It matters because those who want a disarmed population claim that .223 semi-auto rifles are never used for defensive purposes, or are not suitable to be used for those purposes. It is likely that the firearm associated with the casings shown above would be banned by the Maryland law at issue in the 4th Circuit Kolbe v. Hogan decision.  From reason.com:
In Kolbe, the 10-judge majority concludes that the guns and magazines covered by Maryland's ban are "dangerous and unusual" because they are "exceptionally lethal weapons of war" that are not appropriate for civilian use: "We are convinced that the banned assault weapons and large-capacity magazines are among those arms that are 'like' 'M-16 rifles'—'weapons that are most useful in military service'—which the Heller Court singled out as being beyond the Second Amendment's reach."
Heller did nothing of the sort. But that did not stop the 4th Circuit from concocting the lie.

I’ve owned a .223 “Varmint” rifle for over 50years. It is a Mauser Bolt Action. Great for small stuff.

Anyway, how can anyone tell, from a pic, which of the .22 calibres these casings are from? And also, how the hell can anyone determine from the pics that these rounds were fired from a semi auto?

As the author clearly stated:

We do not have information about what model of gun the Uncle used. The pictures of the casings are indicative it was a .223 semi-auto.
Until more details are revealed, it will not be clear that a .223 semi-auto was used to rescue his family from the home invaders.

The close up certainly does appear to be a .223 case. The others you mention are somewhat obscure, while the .223 is very common. It's a safe bet it is not any of the others. Those three cases laying together would be expected from a semi-auto rifle. So, while the author didn't say it WAS a .223 or a semi-auto rifle, his educate guess makes far more sense than your unhinged rant.

One of my Syrian friends tells me that she has never seen Kurds waste ammo or shoot in the air

I also believe the Kurds in the North hunted more than other "tribes" and this may have something to do with it.

Disagree- not that it matters. Looks like a 223/556 case to me. The 545 has a much more pronounced taper and a base( case head) much larger in relation to the mount- the .473 head diameter and 242 ish mouth diameter of the 223/556 is much more even on ratio than the 530 and 230 of the 545....

Plus, the 545x39 is much shorter than the 556x45/223, making the skewed mouth to head relationship much more apparent....

223/556 it is in my somewhat intelligent experience/opinion.

We just need to see the picture of the platform and even more interestingly, pics of the wounds....

That is where the rubber meets the road, or in this case, where the metal meets flesh.

This came from Kurd in Syria. They have always been pretty poor people (until the oil). But very good people, I hold them in great respect.

Oh, I don't discount it. I shoot a .221 Remington Fireball, bought it back in 1976. Almost same bullet, incredible varmint pistol.

“”I’m feeling bad about the home invaders . . . the one which survived.””

Today just isn’t my day for understanding articles. I find more about the weapons/shells than anything to do with the invaders. Where do you see one survived? One killed is in the headline and that’s it..nothing in the article...

Happy shooting. Make sure to teach some youngsters along the way.

All need to know how.

Some may need it, most won’t. But if the chips are down, there is no substitute.

You need to read the rules before posting:

NO profanity, NO personal attacks, NO racism or violence in posts.

It is one thing to recognize that there is a high percentage of crime committed by blacks in this country. It is another to impugn the character of all blacks.

It’s wrong. It’s disgusting. It makes conservatives look bad when it is tolerated.

I agree with you. I don’t mind people calling me out when I am wrong. I should not have posted that.

Sadly, there is a bad element in the black community. But that certainly doesn’t mean all blacks are bad. We know that all whites aren’t good.

I will try to be more mindful in the future of what I post. Thank you.

Humility is a rare quality. Most people become defensive when confronted about wrongdoing. Glad you are one of the rare exceptions.

I didn’t just feel humility. I also felt some embarrassment.

Late this afternoon while visiting my parent’s gravesite on Mother’s Day, I met a nice family that was visiting their mother’s grave. We talked for a little while and I invited them to my church. It was an African American family. I really hope they make it.

Unfortunately, I guess I got caught up in the lynch mob mentality. I would prefer not to be that way.

I have both 5.56 and 5.45 weapons. The shells are pretty close, with obviously the 5.56 being a bit longer and the 5.45 is wider. The angle may be deceiving but that shell pictured looks tapered.

An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Teach the young that a knowledge and practice of guns provides a lifetime of enjoyment and companionship. Among hunters and shooting sports there are no strangers. The bonus is the ability to defend oneself against danger.
