Absolutely correct.
Also need to be taught discipline of barrel control when walking and knowing when it should be used and when not.
Hunters almost all know those things.
I’ve been in skeet shoots as guest where it was apparent those pointing the gun were not aware. I would shake my head and walk away and return my shotgun.
taught discipline of barrel control

Agreed. Barrel control at all times. This is why young people need to be taught at an early age. By the time they have “been in the field” toting an empty gun a few years, they will have adapted to the unconscious “safe” carrying of a firearm. Expecting people to learn safe gun handling out of a book is ridiculous. You don’t learn to play the piano out of a book. Safe gun handling comes with practice, just like knowing where f sharp is on a keyboard.

The .223 has taken the place of the old rim fire .22 rifle for most families.
Its an excellent varmint gun, and the Ruger “Ranch Rifle” is a reasonably priced gun that can be found all over the place.
A common ordinary gun by any measure.

Walk away time.
