Please help me get the font bigger for FR on my phone.
iPhone 7 ^ | 02/17/18 | Self

New iPhone 7 recently updated and I can’t remember which browser still allows you to enlarge font on a site like Free Republic and still allow wrap around text in the viewing screen so that you don’t have to scroll left and right like a fool to read each line.

Whyyyyy can’t we have FR work well and visibly on mobiles? Or do I just not know the trick?

Myself, if I want to read anything, I generally have to hold it far, far away...

Double tap isn’t an option, it is just something you do. Tap the screen once and it enlarges. Tap again and it goes back where it was. I should have said a single tap.

Sorry for the confusion.

How can I use this info on an iPhone? It seems like the directions are for a computer. Am I missing something?

No, it was me trying to help, but commenting on something I know nothing about. My apologies.
I didn't previously know which browser you were using. Glad you found something that works for you!

If you still want to use Opera, the information at the link might help you make FR work properly. Text wrap and zoom settings. I'm not sure this applies to the latest version.

Somehow opera isn’t doing it any more. But Perfect browser has nailed it. Weird. I thank you anyway.

It is annoying that FR will not “flow” in resizing in some browsers including Safari in iOS.

One “workaround” technique that help although not optimal (and you probably have already tried this — but I am just laying it out for others perhaps who might not have found this):

(1) “Double tap” in the text of the post listing or of the article, and it will automatically enlarge the text just the right amount to make that column fill across the screen.

This trick works on many web pages, for example, Drudge Report also to make a single column fill across. Then you can scroll up and down with only that column. You can still pan right and left dragging, but it “sticks” a little making just up and down scrolling precisely on that column pretty easy.

(2) If that is not big enough, then at that point turn the iPhone sideways, and the column width you just picked will expand even more. It will continue to “stick” lightly permitting accurate scrolling up and down without wandering right and left unless you push it that way a bit more.

You probably will be able to read it then, although it is annoying sideways that it shows less lines at once.

Thoughtful readers like Freepers like to go back and re-read things sometimes, and when a lot fewer lines are showing, you have to scroll, and you lose track of where you were at. However I usually can see the text well enough to read it.

On many web pages in Safari iOS there is a “reader view available” — it tells you that in the URL address field and if you click the upper left icon (that looks line little lines in a box) you will get a very easy-to-read single column. However, FR does not allow that — it uses a non-flowing layout that the iPhone does not decode for reader view.

Wonder why the double tap didn’t work for me in safari or Firefox when I tried didn’t enlarge anything.

At least now the millions of times I’m stuck waiting somewhere, with the Perfect browser I can now comfortably read and post here. I sure wish this site would make itself easier for mobile but I guess it won’t be.
