Georgia Totto O'Keeffe (1887-1986). Bach's Concerto in C - Op 8 No 6 for her early work. Amherst Saxophone Quartet's Eubie Dubie and Jazzentials of Bach's Toccata and Funk and Choral in D minor for her New York and Lake George years. And R Carlos Nakai's Echoes of Time and Native Flute Ensemble's Summoning Winds for her New Mexico years.
I love that story! Everyone says that they are probably descended from horse thieves, but you can actually say that you are. Were you raised around the area?
Judge Henry Livingston’s 1790 tongue-in-cheek article on the obligations to reward a successful horsethief.
http://www.henrylivingston.com/writing/prose/anticipationpj6-26-1790.htm
“...whoever shall either by night or by day, secretly and dextrously take and carry away any horse, mare or gelding, to be in his, her or their possession at least eight days, and shall produce sufficient proof of the exploit, shall besides keeping such horse, be intitled to a plated bridle, a cisingle and portmanteau, to be provided by the town wherein such horse, mare or gelding was taken.”
As an unwashed Philistine, I enjoyed the video, and the music. As a clarinet player in my youthhood, I found the saxes and clarinets in the second piece quite enjoyable. I found some of her works startlingly beautiful, and some of them a waste of perfectly good watercolors. And lastly, maybe I need prayer, but I swear, I thought some of the landscapes gave the impression of human females in a supine, receptive pose. Sorry.
Um, yes, I would have to agree with that!
Ping for when I get home. You never know what treasure you’ll find on Freerepublic. Thank you for this.
Yes, the same. She and my Dad were good friends. One of my brothers has a small painting she gave him as a gift for doing some yard work at her Ghost Ranch place.
My brother who still lives in Abiquiu might know your ex.
You’re related to Arthur Pack? Neat.
Amazing. Never crossed my mind, and I have a great imagination. Now I DID see two phallic symbols in her paintings, but that’s obviously from the POV of a straight female.
I was not raised in New Mexico / Colorado but my mother and her siblings were. They were Archuletas and the original settler, Jose Maria Archuleta, was there in 1805 or thereabouts. Archuleta Mesa is up there and is rumored to be a hotspot for the paranormal and UFO activity even today.
Our first ancestor to the New World was a soldier in the service of Captain Juan Usebio Ornate (sic) - a mercenary and ship master in the employ of the King of Spain and he made landfall (1540) in what is today, Vera Cruz. Our ancestor arrived with 10 horses and a full outfit of expensive weaponry and armor so I imagine the ladies found him quite desirable as an escort thru the dangerous country.
Soon they began a long march northward and did not stop until the arrived in what is now Durango, Colorado - and later Abiquiu. My uncle Jerry is a former editor of the Denver Post and did most of this research using resources available to him through his work. Jerry is now 97 years old and has stories of shamen, desperate outlaws and Brujas who stole children in the old days.
I met Georgia O’Keeffe near Ghost Ranch in New Mexico when I was a teenager back in 1964.
The Archuleta family settled the area a long time before it was Ghost Ranch. I think you are referring to them. There were some spooky stories about them and their adventures.
Oh, these are the most marvelous stories. Your uncle Jerry did a great service with his research. Pass on the thanks of a history buff. I sincerely hope it’s on the web. Such work deserves not to be lost.
My grandfather reported for the Denver Post in 1902. He was a rare earths miner and naturalist, as well.

Yes, I think I noticed that too.
Thank you for this amazing thread. Art and music - God’s respite.
The easel has been sitting in the corner for months - you have inspired me to finish my river sunrise which greets me each morning - blood red sky reflected in the water.
Thank you again Mairdie;)
Can you remember anything about meeting her? Stories would be great.
Thank you - thats us. Archuletas from Basque country
Thanks for adding me to your ping list. Look forward to seeing more of your vid's.
Post a picture now and then post again when you finish it. You’ll have a lot of well wishers encouraging you to finish.
And don’t forget good people. They’re another thing that brings great happiness. There are so many good ones here.
An astonishing video. Thank you!
