Netflix going down the drain.
5/27/18 | Total Vanity

Okay, I'll say that this started happening after IMDB scrubbed their forum boards -- which I found very useful. The signal to noise ratio was pretty good, but I'm sure they dropped it so's to attract advertisement dollars. Like who wants to invest their money or give advanced information to a website that's likely to get trashed in there forums?

Now what's happening over at Netflix that I find upsetting? Films and television series that are not in English. Now I love asian films non dubbed with just Closed Captioning. And I understand that some people don't mind and that Netflix is trying to appeal to a global audience. But why do they keep it a secret until you try to watch it. I find it irritating and I'm finding more and more titles featured prominently on their front page that aren't in English.

Why can't they make a note in the mouseover info that it's dubbed or CC only and then what country it's from? Their even going as far as taking these foreign films and featuring them in their website Herald space .. the large marquee above the list of films? There's no account option to hide them and I've grown tired of it. I'll be cancelling netflix over this and their cozy deal with Obama.

chose English and that should fix the problem.

Not true. Mine has always been set to English and there are more and more non-English films.

Because Netflix is creating their own content and competing with the traditional moviemaking companies, those companies are making it difficult or impossible for Netflix to stream their movies.

So pretty much the only thing you can stream on Netflix is Netflix series/movies or stuff from independents/foreign moviemaking companies.

All of the great classics and mainstream movies are theoretically available on DVD, but Netflix doesn't do a good job of replenishing its supply of broken and unreturned DVDs so there are ridiculously long waits even if you decided to keep the DVD option.

I'm thinking of getting rid of Netflix and replacing with Amazon Prime or Hulu. Hulu seems to have a deal with Criterion which has a great store of classic, foreign, and classic foreign films. That's my personal sweet spot.

The dearth of good movies on Netflix is amazing. Just try typing the name of your favorite actor, actress, or director into the search window and see if any movies come up. For example, no Tom Cruise movies most likely because Netflix just ran an anti-Scientology series. I'm no fan of Tom Cruise the Scientologist but he's a decent actor and seems to have a good eye for what movies to act in.

You'll have similar results for pretty much any decent performer or director you choose.

Netflix is a wasteland populated by weirdo zombie Netflix creatures.

Dubbed foreign films vs subtitle.

“Babbette’s Feast” seen in both versions.

Subtitle was definitely the winner. The subbed version at times was indiscernible as to what was actually said.

Granted, some of the action film is missed (reading those subtitles, you know) There are times when it is felt English/American movies would fare much better with subtitles Especially the English movies. LOL they speak funny over there! :-)

Before canceling, watch both seasons of the Norwegian TV series “Occupied” in subtitled form.

IMO, the first season was better than the second. Great demonstration of what happens when a nation goes full libtard. YMMV.

I almost didn’t continue “Rain” after watching part of the first episode. The stupid kids were really bothering me. But then it got better and I liked it.

Same thing with a similar show (maybe a 5-part “movie”) called “Cargo”. First one or two episodes with characters doing stupid stuff. And on notable stupid thing in the middle of the show. I REALLY liked “Cargo” once it ended. A dad’s quest to keep his baby daughter safe in a zombie apocalypse.

Politics aside, I’d sure hate to see that happen. The subtitled foreign films are great. Love the science fiction. Examples:

Just finished the third year of “The Ministry of Time” (El Ministerio del Tiempo) in Spanish - subtitled. Brilliant!

Went for a second shot of “He’s Back!” (Er ist wieder da) subtitled - in German.

“The Returned” (Les Revenants) series in French also subtitled. (The American series was awful).

There.
Their.
They’re.
Different words mean different things. There is not an interchangeability in their meanings when they’re used correctly.

Netflix definitely is going down the drain. Not only did they give Obama a show, but Michelle Wolf (the comedian who made fun of Sarah Sanders) has a weekly show now.

Once, I saw the first few minutes of a pay per view movie with subtitles. Some of the words in the movie sounded familiar--not enough to understand, but enough to make me want to figure out the language. A few minutes later, I did figure it out. It was English, a Scottish dialect. I did not pay to watch the movie; I should be able to watch a movie in English without subtitles.

If I have to read a movie whilst I’m trying to watch it, I won’t do it!

“But why do they keep it a secret (language of the film) until you try to watch it.”

Annoys the CRAP out of me also. It would be great if someone could assemble a database of their shows that are NOT in English, and then we print it out, and check the list to see if what we want to watch is on that list.
