Many companies take the approach of designing products, services and experiences that are targeted at the majority. And occasionally if there are resources and a strong business case, they turn their attention to serving niche audiences. But there are increasingly more anecdotes that support leaning into a different approach moving forward.
Design for the niche, win the masses.
A few weeks ago while I was in New York, I ate at a restaurant that was entirely gluten-free. I am gluten-free for health reasons, and it was a rare treat to go to a restaurant knowing I could eat everything on the menu.
My friends who ate with me do not have dietary restrictions, so they don't care if the food is gluten-free, as long as it tastes good. But I care. And because when we're together, they want to include me, they will look for a restaurant that has plenty of options for me to eat.
That restaurant was designed for the niche audience of gluten-sensitive consumers. But it is enjoyed by the masses, who just enjoy good food. Conventional wisdom says you should design for the majority, even if it means alienating diverse customer groups with unique needs. But as the U.S. quickly marches toward being a minority-majority society, the days of winning with this approach are numbered....

A lifetime of that leads to diabetes, which leads to lots of health costs, which would make Amelia-Bedelia-Octavia Cortez very happy.
Capture the ghettopotamus demographic, win over the masses. (Only costs a few dozen destroyed fast food restaurants each year.)
Interesting analysis. White audiences don’t particularly notice when the cast of a movie is all white, but neither do they notice if the cast is mixed race or even mostly minority. Why? Because whites do not put a high priority on race. Minorities do and really notice an all white cast, mixed cast or all minority cast.
But, the liberal/Democrat/progressive meme is that only whites are racist.
Nassim Taleb called it the “intolerant minority” strategy. A majority may not really care if they eat gluten-free, or halal meat, or occasionally watch a black actor - as it doesn’t effect them. The highly intolerant minority DOES care, and they will make the most noise and trouble for everyone.
Well, I pretty much don’t drink Coke or eat at McDonalds.
Maybe they could aim to taste good instead.
Nearly all couples in commercials nowadays are “blended”.
And here I thought they were just focusing their marketing on the ‘poor impulse control’ crowd...
I thought that was the most interesting quote in the article as well. I don’t give a ______ what color your skin is or what country your grandpa came from. I do care if you are an obnoxious @$$_____, are stupid, loud, or trying to be ‘special’ (have your own set of rules) in a crowd or group...
I don’t eat at McDonalds or drink Coke anymore but they certainly do taste good which is why they are popular.
In fact, Cheerios have been a 'white folks' finger food for toddlers... like forever. And then there is Yoplait... not exactly a minority target food either.
The McDonald’s Happy Meal. Probably the best ad strategy in history.
McDonald's taste is merely “not awful.” Apps like Trip Adviser are gradually killing low end food chains because they help you find places like this one wherever you are.
What I have noticed is that for a very long time now most companies no longer direct their advertising to families as they used to, maybe because the liberals have been so successful at destroying the nuclear family concept and maybe these and other companies direct their advertising to Blacks is because they are more easily manipulated?

We stopped at a Mickey D’s today. When we got to our table we discovered that the milk I received had been previously opened and half consumed. We were so disgusted we tossed everything and left. We won’t be back. ICK.
