Why did we name a bill after John McCain?
Don Surber ^ | Tues, Aug 14, 2018 | Don Surber

President Trump visited Fort Drum, New York, on Monday to sign the annual defense budget into law.

CNN was appalled, writing, "The defense authorization bill is named after John McCain — but Trump didn't mention him."

This begs the question: Why did we name an annual spending bill after a sitting senator?

As a tribute?

And if President Trump not mentioning McCain by name is an insult, what does that say about the 10 senators who voted against the bill? Do they hate a man who is battling cancer so much that they refused to support this tribute?

Let me name and shame the 10 naysayers.
Feinstein (D-CA)
Gillibrand (D-NY)
Harris (D-CA)
Lee (R-UT)
Markey (D-MA)
Merkley (D-OR)
Paul (R-KY)
Sanders (I-VT)
Warren (D-MA)
Wyden (D-OR)

Seriously, naming bills after senators is the sort of ego-tripping that led to every other highway in West Virginia being named after Bobby the K Byrd.

It is the sign of a sefie-made man. A self-made man doesn't need his name on a bill. It's on a tower.

Which is why you can almost hear Barack the Commie Obama wail in the night: His name on a bill! Why didn't I think of that?

But this has its possibilities.

Imagine the Keith Ellison Domestic Violence Act.

The Bernie Sanders College Embezzlement Act.

The Nancy Pelosi Free Senility Testing Act.

The Elizabeth Warren Native American Impersonation Act.

The Adam Schiff Psychosis Awareness Week Act.

The Dianne Feinstein Chinese Espionage Act.

The Joe Biden Girl Empowerment Act.

And finally, the Richard Blumenthal Stolen Valor Reauthorization Act.

Surber has a wicked sense of humor. I posted this mainly for the two lists. The second is hilarious.

Hahahaha
Did those demonic-rat senators vote for the defense bill?
I don’t recall.

The second list is worthy of the posting!
You’re right about that!

Why did we name a bill after John McCain?

1 To honor the deceased.

2. Because all of the late hours he pulled walking from office to office in the Senate Office Building lobbying to get it passed.

3. To honor the last serving member of the Keating 5.

I’m sick of tributes to McCain.

President Trump was under no obligation to mention McCain. It was the Senate’s tribute to McCain, not his, and certainly not “the American People’s,” even though it was our money funding the bill!

As I’ve said before, McCain is always called a Hero because he spent time in the Hanoi Hilton.

The same people who lambasted Candidate Trump when he made the comment that McCain isn’t a Hero just because he was captured (because McCain used it to gain Political power) wouldn’t be able to name any of the other Hero’s that spent time in the same POW Camp as McCain did. They are forgotten.

Of course, Democrats Voted against McCain in 2008, even his “good friends” in the Senate. Heck, some of his Republican Senate “friends” did too.

I have to fight this all the time when explaining “the USS John McCain”

This bill is named after him because they are, once again, trying to trick people into doing things. Which rarely happens with Trump (Although Donald Trump needs to be more careful of who is in the White House)

But yeah, many things named John McCain are for his dad and granddad. You know, the real heros.

The good news is that the median survival time for McQueeg's cancer is 15 months. At best that would be about the middle of October.

So there's a 50/50 chance that the song bird will have sung his swan song by Halloween.

Hahaha...hey, you remember “Bill”? “Bill?” Remember it snowed that night and the next morning we had to shovel out our cars?

Sheesh. Nobody ever remembers snowstorm “Bill”...

All the things I heard about both the father and grandfather growing up were generally pretty positive, especially the father. By all accounts, he was pretty good at his job and generally respected. I remember hearing the adults talk about him at their parties when I lived in Japan and the Philippines during the mid sixties to early seventies.

I don’t remember anything specific, but I recall the respect for ADM John S. McCain Jr. (CINCPAC at the time) was evident in the tone of voices. (Not some drunk officer talking about what a douchebag he was)

The grandfather I only know about from what I have read in books. He pretty much agreed to be the sacrificial lamb for Halsey...and I respect him for doing it. It was a mix of loyalty to his friend and his service.

I particularly enjoyed reading about the relationship between Halsey and McCain...Halsey was a notorious neat freak, meticulous in personal appearance, and McCain was a total slob, dressed in stained uniforms, unpressed. A slovenly look. And when he smoked, he would just let the ashes drop where they would, which pissed of the neat freak Halsey so much he detailed a seaman to walk around him with a broom and dustpan to keep the deck clean!

My mother never thought much of that kind of thing (a guy giving up his career for the good of the service) but I am certain my dad did. When the subject came up (about some officer being punished in some way and instead of speaking up, the officer would just take it for the “good of the service”) I remember my mother with a highball in her left hand, a cigarette in the other (held with the forearm perpendicular to the ground and the lit end pointing over her right shoulder) flashing a hot look of anger on her dark Italian-Armenian face at the subject.

I asked her about it years later, and she confirmed she hated the concept!

Those were interesting times.

Easy answer to the headline question. Because congress is more interested in pomp and circumstance than good legislation.

How could he? He was on the top floor; they were in tiger cages. He had a ‘maid’; they had bugs.
