There’s a lot happening in the world right now, so let’s get the most pressing stuff out of the way and sorted: was the late Gong Show creator/host Chuck Barris really an assassin for the CIA?

Barris claimed in his 1982 memoir Confessions Of A Dangerous Mind to have been secretly working for the intelligence organization during the sixties and seventies—around the same time he was developing kitschy and iconic television shows like The Dating Game, The Newlywed Game, and The Gong Show. Is it possible that the unassuming and at-times silly Barris could be telling the truth here—or was this all an attention-seeking hoax by an expert performer?

True story: Years ago (1980s),while working in a big city ER,the day charge nurse and I used to argue about Pee Wee Herman. I insisted that he was a perv and she insisted that he,and his show,were great. We had both transferred to other departments when he was arrested in that “adult theater”.

Barris was a fantacist. Maybe the fact that he was married to Paley’s niece and Paley was marginally cooperating with the CIA as were a number of media execs made him make the leap that he was a CIA assassin for hire. I doubt the little guy had his head screwed on tight

I went to one the tapings in the 1980s. I wasn’t called down thankfully. Was just there to see it in action. On the same visit I did the tonight show and whatever Bill Mahar was doing at the time. Mahar’s show was boring but The Tonight show was special as it had Doc Ed and Johnny all there and Jimmy Stewart was a guest. Legendary. The tail end of the golden era of Hollywood.
