I need to go rent a good WAR MOVIE (or an ESPIONAGE movie) right NOW... Can y'all recommend some good ones for me?

(I apologize to FR because this thread is soooooo breaking the rules and I'm sure it will be pulled momentarily... but if I posted this to Vanity it probably wouldn't be seen by anyone, let alone the majority of the War buffs.... And I need to rent a movie now before the video store closes.... Again, I'm sooooo sorry!!)

ANYONE have an idea for a decent American Revolution war movie other than The Patriot?

I feel guilty because I can't think of one. HELP!

Excellent choice. Without a doubt - "The Patriot" is the movie to see tonight or this week.

I started the day with 1776 then watch the Patriot and was going to finish the day with Gettysburg, but got to late a drudge came on.

BTW the Cubs won.

No, No, No, No Starship Troopers.

Such a good book. Such a bad movie.

But, I recommend Battle of the Bulge and Midway.

Kelley's Heroes is good as well but not really a war movie per se.

Where Eagles Dare is good but twisty.

Guns of Naverone!

There are a bunch but no Troopers please (and no new Rollerball either).

And for revolutionary war movies, I'm watching "Revolution" right now.

The added bonus is the fact that it upsets liberals. Children with weapons and armed church congregations make liberals edgy.

If you haven't seen the recent Tom Selleck movie about the events leading up to D Day, I highly recommend that.

I'd say Saving Private Ryan. Enemy Below is also excelent.Down Periscope,Sink The Bismark, Battle of The Bulge, and Bridge at Remagan are good too. Whatever you do, don't go anywhere near Thin Red Line. Worst war movie, no, worst movie I've ever seen.

It isn't in too many video stores, but "Merrill's Marauders" is a 1962 World War Two film about the legendary outfit carrying out special ops (before the term was in use) way way behind enemy lines in Burma. Worth looking for.

If you don't mind a subtitiled movie check the foreign section for a Jap flick called "Rhan."

Anyone know any good first World War movies? In many ways a forgotten war but one that set the stage for the remainder of the 20th century. A great uncle of mine perished at Ypres. My country established its place at the Somme. Of course it was not a war with great decisive battles for the most part, but there must be some great stories that have been made into movies.

MAN! That list brings back some memories! Hard to go wrong with any of those.

Let me add a few of my favorites to that already great list:

We Were Soldiers
Saving Private Ryan
Band of Brothers (see it even if you have to steal it!)
Black Hawk Down (WARNING!!: This movie will make you fighting mad at the Washington idiots calling the shots and extremely proud of our men in uniform!)
The Patriot
Apocalypse Now (I know, it is not true to the RVN, but I liked it)
Das Boot
All Quiet on the Western Front
Gettysburg

All Quiet on Western Front

Just FYI Remarque wrote two books, All quiet on the western front, and The Road Back, the second was never
made into a movie. It details a second result as it were
which follows the hero after the war ends, interestingly
all the atributes of Post traumatic stress syndrome are
displayed in the various charactors.

One April Morning was a pretty good depiction of the opening battles at Lexington and Concord, but I haven't seen it in years so I'm not sure if it's still available.

Two other excellent war movies are The Scarlet and the Black, the true story of an Irish priest at the Vatican who risks his life to funnel 10,000 Allied POW's out of German hands, and One Against the Wind, another true story about a British woman living in Paris who establishes the most successful underground railroad for downed airmen of the entire war.

Gregory Peck stars as the Irish priest in The Scarlet and the Black, while the man who played the father in The Sound of Music (I've forgotten his name) plays the SS colonel trying to capture him.

You are so right my friend. I remember when the movie came out - the libs were freaked that the kids used their weapons at dad's orders to kill the enemy. Great scene. And the Rev grabbing his weapon to march off and kill the oppressors was classic. Reminds me of another great war picture that can not be missed - Sgt. York. Gary Cooper was so great and the storyline (true story) was inspiring. Would love to see that remade today. Possible???? I loved that movie so much that I named by last son, Cooper because of it.

You all ROCK !! I'm writing down all of these (many of which I've seen, but are worth seeing again), and I'll never be lacking in good ideas for war movies again!! Thank you all, keep the ideas coming!

Captain Peter, what does "for the very ambitious" mean? Are those long movies?
