Thinking about College (Vanity)
Me

Posted on 12/19/2004 9:50:31 PM PST by AVNevis

OK, normally I would never post this thread. But things are slow tonight and I am bored so I will.

I would like to see if anyone has suggestions for college. I am a high school freshman with a 3.8 GPA (And that's before you factor in the advanced classes) and who consistantly ranks among the top 10% of California students on standardized tests. I live in Sacramento and would like to stay in California if possible. I would also like to go to a public school unless I could get a scholership. I am looking at a major in political science.

A few that I am thinking about right now are UC Berkely, UCLA, UC Davis, and Sacramento State, but am open to others.

Obviously I still have a few years to think about this, but as I said earlier, I found tonight an opportunity to start exploring.

Make sure you nail the SATs or ACTs.

Start looking at what the schools you want to go to want in a student (GPA, extra cirriculars, etc) and what they want in terms of classes taken in high school already.

Check out Pepperdine University, a private college in Pepperdine, and UCLA. Both have websites; plus, if you check them out in person, you can have informal cafeteria chats with current students at each.

Doesn't Berkeley have very specific statewide requirements, so that you would know well ahead of time if you make the cutoff? That's how it was at Univ of Wisconsin where I grew up.

I've heard the nursing is still a pretty hot field. As for particular schools, sorry, can't help much. However, metrology(science of precise measurement) is also a hot field and the best school for it is Butler County Community College in PA. I know it's hard to believe that a community college wold have a best anything, but they do.

Don't know if that helps.

All UCs and State schools have the same admission requirements. I have a list and will post them if you want, but it would take up a lot of space.

Go to Berkley. It's a great campus, great educational programs and their College Republican group is tough as nails... you have to be if you're going to profess your Republicanism at Berkley.

Stanford is good.

Rice University is good, but in Texas..

I spent most of my post college life in San Diego. University of San Diego is a good Catholic school. SDSU is a deathtrap, you will never get out of there within five years. UCSD ain't bad.

That being said, it might depend on what you want to study. Though THAT changes a number of times. Oh, for Marine Biology..

Remember, college is an EDUCATION, not a vocation. What you learn in college is really MORE important than where you attend.

Otherwise no one but Harvard Grads would rule the world. Or so they would have you believe.

There isn't enough bandwidth on the 'net to cover it all.

I've heard more than a few people suggest Peperdine, however I don't know what they offer or how hard it is to get into. But I understand they are pretty conservative, so that's a plus.
