Word For The Day, Wednesday, May 25, 2005 - threnody
Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary ^ | 05/25/2005 | The Janitor

Posted on 05/25/2005 5:16:48 AM PDT by VRWCmember

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

threnody \THREN-uh-dee\ noun

a song of lamentation for the dead; elegy

Example sentence:
In the opera's final scene, the leading lady sings a threnody to mourn the murdered king.

Did you know?
"Threnody" encompasses all genres. There are great threnodies in prose (such as the lines from Charles Dickens' _Bleak House_ upon the death of Little Jo: "Dead, your Majesty. Dead, my lords and gentlemen. Dead..."), in poetry (as in W.H. Auden's "Funeral Blues": "The stars are not wanted now: put out every one, / Pack up the moon and dismantle the sun..."), and in music (Giovanni Pergolesi's "Stabat Mater," for one). "Threnody," which we borrowed from the Greek word "threnoidia" (from "threnos," the word for "dirge"), has survived in English since the early 1600s. "Melody" and "tragedy" are related to "threnody" through the Greek root that forms their ending -- "aeidein," which means "to sing." By the same token, "comedy" is related as well.

Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the Word for the Day in a sentence.
The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day.

The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)
Practice makes perfect.....post on....

Good Morning Class. Welcome to School! Today we get a nice Wednesday Word with some Friday Word potential.

Here is my example with WFTD.

If the republicans in the senate don't grow a backbone and some testicles, they may be singing a threnody to lament the passing of their status as majority party.

I've opened a new classroom, but Miss Rika has the gradebook. So if you're looking for a grade you'll have to ping her. Miss Slippy is pretty generous with the plusses if you compliment her shapely legs, so you might try submitting your homework to her instead. My secret for getting extra plusses on my A+ from xs will remain a secret between me and her, so you're on your own if you want her to review your work.

I'll be in a training class all day and away from my computer. Y'all have fun in my absence.

The deal was a winner for Kennedy
For Boxer and Reid--pure serenity
Now the lefties can sleep
With the RINOs mere sheep
R.I.P. Reagan's party-- it's your threnody

Morning! A quick one, and I've got to go-I'm taking my sister-in-law to work with me today.

Mc Lame and the other RINOs
Had better say their prayers-
As soon as their "agreement" wears thin
There will be an end to all their airs

The senate fighting will escalate
And the voters will recall
At 2006 election time
Who it was that dropped the ball

Back later...

Hit the post button too soon-

The threnody for these wusses
Will be a joy to hear
When it comes I'll go right out
And buy fat Teddy a beer

I thinks this counts as Threnody:

We can never replace a fellow Marine or best friend, but I can attest that he died doing what we all hope to be doing as Marines, they were advancing, leading, and setting the example, they were being MARINES! It may not matter in the grand scheme of things to anyone but us, but we are singularly proud that we have and know Marines that fought and died like these.

We remember and memorialize them and keep them alive every single time we put on this uniform -- we are just honored to wear the same eagle, globe, and anchor as these warrior/heroes. We don't make policy, we don't decide on the fight, but we do fight and win. And when we win, it is because every one of these Marines fights with us in spirit, and we will not, we cannot let them down.

To we Marines, Semper Fidelis is more than a motto. It was to them, and to us who were privileged to fight with them, a way of life.

If the ACLU (all of them) were blown up tomorrow, I would be hard pressed to sing a threnody in their memory. (God forgive me for my wicked thoughts.)

Ignoring the threnody for 6-year-old Tiffany after being savaged by a 170 pound 12-year-old monster, the courts saw fit to let him go. After all, he was a good kid. Now, Lionel Tate is back in jail for armed robbery. May they keep him there. Any 12 year old who can't tell the difference between play wrestling moves and beating someone to death is probably beyond redemption.

I don't forsee a threnody anytime in the near future for the stupidity of crooks.

You can't make this stuff up! 'POSTER' BOYS FOR STUPIDITY

A Brooklyn suspect in two livery-cab stickups redefined stupid yesterday when he walked into a police station to check on his arrested partner-in-crime — and found himself standing in front of his own wanted poster.

My threnody

There once were two ladies from Maine
I'' tell you they're both royal pains
Armed with nothing but cell phones
They made five more Snowe clones
And now they march with their captain McCain.
