Here's my top ten, in no particular order:
1. "The High and the Mighty" theme
2. "Tara's Theme" from Gone with the Wind
3. "San Francisco" from the Clark Gable/Jeanette McDonald film
4. "Lawrence of Arabia" theme
5. "Colonel Bogey March" from "The Bridge on the River Kwai"
6. Theme from "Chariots of Fire"
7. Theme from "The Guns of Navaronne"..Dmitri Tiompkin's best, IMHO
8. Theme from the "Godfather"
9. "As Time Goes By" from Casablanca
10. "Somewhere over the Rainbow" from "The Wizard of Oz"
A few other brief comments:
1. Two very catchy orchestrations, in fact THE signature pieces of their films, but IMHO not really "songs" and therefore excluded from my list:
a) "Jaws" shark music
b) Five note sequence from "Close Encounters of the Third Kind"
2. Worst, most saccharine, and waaay overrated : "Lara's Theme" from "Dr. Zhivago"
BTW..if anyone has any midis they want to link and share..please do so..

Theme Song to SHAFT by Isaac Hayes
Who's the black private dick
That's a sex machine to all the chicks?
SHAFT!
Ya damn right!
Who is the man that would risk his neck
For his brother man?
SHAFT!
Can you dig it?
Who's the cat that won't cop out
When there's danger all about?
SHAFT!
Right On!
They say this cat Shaft is a bad mother
SHUT YOUR MOUTH!
I'm talkin' 'bout Shaft.
THEN WE CAN DIG IT!
He's a complicated man
But no one understands him but his woman
JOHN SHAFT!
Honorable Mention -
Repo Man ~ Iggy Pop
Diva (Aria from La Wally) ~ Alfredo Catalani
Liquid Sky ~ Slava Tsukerman

Apparently, nobody who has posted so far has seen "Shaft". There is no better theme than that.

I don't think I can claim any one song for a theme, but I LOVE soundtracks and movie scores.
Dances with Wolves
Rainman
The Commitments
Top Gun
Footloose
Born on the Fourth of July
The Color Purple
Witness (I would love getting that on CD)
Lord of the Rings
Natural Born Killers (the Leonard Cohen stuff was great in that)
That's my ten. Rainman has some great tunes on its soundtrack, inlcuding Etta James' "At Last", and Hans Zimmer's scoring is unreal. I used some if it for my college video projects as background music.

The first one I thought of was the theme to the 1992 version of "Last of the Mohicans."
