The Hobbit Hole XXV - Fare you well! Fare you well!
http://freeper.the-hobbit-hole.net/ ^

Posted on 10/15/2005 7:13:08 AM PDT by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Fare you well! Fare you well!

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

Rosie's off to her first day of work!

I'm sure she'd appreciate prayers that it goes smoothly.

Okay, it's Christmas shopping time. Jr. wants an iPod. And, of course, Corin is ignorant.

Assuming he gets one, this is what's currently on the Apple website.

IF he gets that, is that all he needs? Or are their accessories that have to come along with it? (which might mean a lesser version).

I'm not likely to buy directly from Apple, but I need an idea of what to buy and what to look for elsewhere.

Discuss.

I wish you all could see the way folks are acting in the office today!

You'd think this thing was landing within the hour. *rolls eyes*

I'm really aggravated becase we just spent $1600+ fixing the fence. It hasn't even been painted yet.

If Wilma comes to Miami, I'll have to stay just so I can tie myself to the fence and keep it from falling. ;-)

First of all, I'd go with a nano or a shuffle. That way when he loses it you're not out many hundreds of dollars. Also, the limited capacity might limit song downloading. This can get out of control quickly and eat up a lot of storage on the computer and eat a hole in the wallet if using the iTunes store.

For myself, I have a peripheral drive where I store all my music. I've also made a vow to not purchase music online. Songs are like chocolate and I get greedy. Sticking with discs I own and only buying artists I like (versus the hot song of the day) has worked well enough for me. There aren't enough hours in a year to listen to what I have already.

Accessory-wise, they come with a charger and headphones. It's a standard headphone jack so you can use your own like I do on the airplane. For the car I bought an iTrip (runs about $25) that does a limited-range radio frequency and broadcasts directly into the car radio. Works fine. There are all sorts of carriers and protective cases. I recommend getting something because the dumb cases scratch easily. I made my first one (out of black velvet and red satin - to match my U2 limited ed 'pod) and it did the job.

My officemate has a son about the same age as Jr. and went through this last Christmas. Officemate bought his son a simple mp3 player (sony or something). But his son didn't like it because it wasn't an *iPod*. He got over it and moved on to other fads and Officemate wasn't out a ton of cash.

Urgh - that would aggravate me, too. Wish I could steer Wilma somewhere else for ya.

Thanks. We didn't do the MP3 last year. I can't remember what the big ticket item was.

Though looking at the nano, there's not much difference in price between the 4G nano and the 30G 'pod. Interesting. For me, that would move the decision to a Shuffle for Christmas.

Oh, forgot to mention speakers. They don't come with speakers. Just headphones. But computer speakers plug in just fine.;) (Listening to Alison Krauss at work, right now on my Dell speakers)

Speakers aren't really an issue. He has his CD earphones on anytime he leaves his room.

iPods are amazing toys. Highly addictive, convenient doodads. But ultimately it's a toy.

It took wife several years of marriage (pre-children) to realize that toys are ~required~ Christmas gifts.

Apple online, and in their stores offers an educational discount. Any teacher can get it, but it allows only one purchase per family, per year.

Joseph had saved enough money for an I Pod Nano, so Paul went to the Apple Store to get it for him. It is $20 off the regular price. Paul, however, had to pay the sales tax. I don't know if they'd charge sales tax with an online purchase, but there is Free Shipping from the Apple site, I think.

Unless Jr. just HAS to have a Nano, I'd recommend an I Pod. The new ones are a little smaller than they used to be; not as bulky.

I don't think Apple is selling the I Pod Mini anymore, but I saw some at the Sharper Image website yesterday, so they must still have some in stock.

Thanks. I know a teacher. ;-)

We'll look for the discount.

I got my first pod through Dell years ago for a hundred less than list price. My second one a couple months ago was from a pawn shop and was about 150 less than what I could have gotten only. For best deals on pods check dealmac.com

If you check there every now and then you can spot some really nice deals on them. My first one was a 10% off coupon I spotted on that site (plus Dell's online store's regular 10% off). Getting a model that is discontinues like the mini definitely seems to be the way to go. The play-back capabilities are the same between a mini and a nano. The one I got from the pawn shop was a brand new (unused) discontinued model. It was a 4th Gen but the only thing the new ones have that it does not is photo albums and videos (videos as of last week).

Apple DOES charge tax on it's site but other places like Amazon also sell pods and do not.
