"Brokeback Mountain," the story of two male ranch hands who become romantically involved, led all films with eight nominations for the 78th annual Academy Awards.

"Brokeback," based on a short story by E. Annie Proulx, picked up nods for best picture, best director (Ang Lee), best actor (Heath Ledger), best supporting actress (Michelle Williams) and best supporting actor (Jake Gyllenhaal). Its screenplay adaptation, by Larry McMurtry and Diana Ossana, also received a nomination.

You know...

I was in public, and I said, much to my regret, that "Brokeback Mountain" seemed liked a stupid premise for a movie to a friend of mine. Before the words were even out of my mouth some creepy little dyke laid into me about be a homophobe and all that crap.

Point is, this movie is untouchable. If you criticize it for any reason in seems to de facto mean you hate gay people. I think it's a shoe in for that reason alone.

Is it any surprise that Hollywood snubbed "The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe" and left it out of all of the important categories?

Would it be safe to assume that some of those poor little statues are going to end up being shoved somewhere other than on the mantle?

Is it just my perception, or are others seeing a trend lately to portray homosexuality more as a choice than an inherent trait as was promoted 10 years ago?

I am thinking that now the homos have received a sense of social acceptance, they can shed their 'civil rights' mantra and move more to the 'social movement' phase.

It is, and always has been, about gaining acceptance so that recruiting would be easier. This is why they have worked so hard to remove the stigma and even create a negative stigma in society for opposing homosexuality. (Homophobe)

Now, they are thrusting deeply into our social fabric, telling teens that its OK to "experiment and see if you like it", and that its a choice they can make if they want.

They do this because the 1% of people who are homosexual is too thin pickings for them. They want more. They want young boys and girls to be willing to give it a shot..with them.

The promotion of this movie is about nothing more than pushing the envelope forward to portray a heterosexual "jumping the gap" and falling in love with another man as if anyone could do it. Of course, love and sex are the same thing for them.

Of course Busted Sphincter Mountain gets the nod, it's Hollyweird.

I watch the Oscars about as much as I watch network news.

I still remember my disgust upon seeing clips of Halle Berry's hypocritical acceptance speech.

What a sewer.

My pick for last great film to win an academy award is Braveheart. Hey, do you think the writers of South Park can sue for royalities? Do they eat pudding in this epic?

CRASH was a very good film. I generally don't like movies that are basically just character studies with no real start/end, but I thoroughly enjoyed Crash.

I am beginning to believe this movie is deserving of its awards. There have been as many, possibly more, threads about it here on FR than on DU.

"I don't see how the awards this year, with what they've nominated, are going to appeal to many people."

And we all, myself included, thought "Brokeback" would tank at the box office. The leftists are running the schools. The indoctrination of kids without strong parenting is working. Almost 1/2 of America is aligned with the left.

The Rounders (1965) with Glenn Ford and Henry Fonda was a better story of two cowboys alone on a bleek mountain...

"Ben and Howdy are a couple of aging cowboys who bust broncos out of Sedona for Jim Ed Love, a slick operator if ever there was one. Sisters, Meg and Agatha, have their eyes on Ben and Howdy, but the boys aren't ready to settle down yet. They spend the winter in the high country corralling more than 100 stray cattle at $7 a head for Jim Ed. Most years, they blow their winter pay in one spring night at a Sedona bar, but this year, Ben and Howdy have a plan: to take an ornery roan that Ben has been unable to break and bet their bankroll that no cowboy at the Sedona rodeo can stay on the horse. What will they do if they win - marry the sisters or head for Tahiti?"
