NBC10.com 3-Year-Old Critical After Being Mauled By Pit Bull

NEW CASTLE, Del. -- A 3-year-old girl remains in critical condition at Christiana Hospital.
Police said the incident happened on Oakmont Avenue at 10:30 a.m. in New Castle.
Police and paramedics responded after they received the report of a child who was attacked by a pit bull. When they arrived, they found Destiny Campbell suffering from massive head and shoulder injuries.
Police said the victim and her mother had driven to a home to pick up the child's grandmother. While inside the home, a dog, named Diamond, attacked the child. Police said that the attack was unprovoked.
A group of area residents responded to the calls for help from relatives and began beating the dog with sticks and broom handles.
The SPCA later responded to the scene and caught the dog, which had fled from the residents.
Witnesses said that the dog was generally peaceful and calmed down immediately after the attack.
"After this happened, the dog appeared to be polite. The tail was wagging. Even when the SPCA arrived and had to corral the dog with the lasso, the dog was still listening," said Trinidad Navarro, of the New Castle County Police Department.
The pit bull belonged to a family member, Turquoise Robinson. Police took her into custody on unrelated charges.
As she was being taken into custody on Monday afternoon, Robinson saw NBC 10 reporter Tim Furlong near a police car waiting to take her away.
"Why are they taking you away?" asked Furlong, as Robinson walked by.
Robinson then spit on the reporter as a cameraman taped the incident, and she responded, "that's why."
Police then charged Robinson with spitting on Furlong.
Robinson has not been charged in connection with the pit bull attack.
I think it's the Governments fault! People who want a bull dog should be given a subsidized house in the country, with welfare checks delivered by supervised convicted pedophiles who smell sweaty. Solves a lot of problems!!!
i think pit bulls were originally bred as fighting dogs to fight in pits.
what traits would you select for, if you were breeding fighting dogs?
there is nothing more wrong with pit bulls than with wolves or wolf dogs or any other fierce animals. the problems come when they are in proximity to humans, especially kids.
the other problems are bad training and idiot owners, such as the one in the story.
many other types of dog are dangerous when it comes to children. however, some breeds are clearly more dangerous than others--it isn't just media hype.

Although pit bull mixes and Rottweillers are most likely to kill and seriously maim, fatal attacks since 1975 have been attributed to dogs from at least 30 breeds."
pit bulls and rotties seem to be WAY out in front in terms of lethal attacks.

With so many breeds , does anyone really need a pit bull? With the reputation they have , why would anyone want one? Are they trying to frighten or intimidate their neighbors?
I believe they are.
I'm a Deputy in a rural county.I see these dogs and deal with them constantly with never a positive outcome.I went on a call new Years Eve afternoon where a couple had been run into their home and could not come out because a Pit had broken loose in the area and settled in at their residence for some reason.
I have a German Shepard with German papers, a beautiful dog and my wifes only child. I love dogs but I must admit I agree with an earlier post that these dogs need to be exterminated. I see to many injuries and mauling from their temperament to be safe.

In that particular part of Delaware your belief would be correct. Actually in most areas of Delaware it is actually common for certain types of people to have certain types of dogs specifically to frighten and/or intimidate neighbors.
I am not a believer in the idea of banning or getting rid of a particular breed, however, the level of irresponsibility of owners of certain breeds in Delaware does lead me to lean in that direction. And not just for pit bulls.
I'd like to see the stats on that one. I have a very hard time believing that "most" pit bull owners are "regular people." I never see any regular people with these dogs on the news, even the ones who haven't attacked (yet).
Perhaps a middle ground would be to ban these dogs from urban and suburban areas. We don't allow pigs and sheep to wallow in city streets, and they haven't mauled any children.
My sons dog, a German shorthaired pointer, the gentlest breed of dog around, bit at my grandsons face once but although it looked unprovoked, it turned out ( he was 3 years old), he had gotten curious about the dogs privates and grabbed him and the dog reacted. I am not saying this child did that but it may have done something to the dog.
Thank you CDC. In layman's terms......Pit Bulls and Rottweillers are big, aggressive and DO NOT let go when they attack. Please CDC, send me some government money. On the other hand, we live with a 140lb Rottweller, almost 6 years old and raised correctly. She's a sweetie, but I doubt most people would walk up and pat her on the head. We also have "the old man", a 12 year old Turkish Kangal (Anatolian Shepherd here in the states), about 105 lbs. He's the watchdog, and is the most aggressive animal I've ever owned. I guess breeding for wolf hunts tend to get the "sissy" out of the breed. Pit Bulls are no different, they were bred for a reason....and child care wasn't one of them.
I will not dispute your professional experience, but when it comes to the extermination of a breed, I have to admit that German Sheperds are number 1 on my list of the first that would have to go. I have felt that way about that breed for nearly 40 years.
I have been told, repeatedly, that events like this are rare.
