NBC10.com 3-Year-Old Critical After Being Mauled By Pit Bull
POSTED: 3:14 pm EST January 30, 2006 UPDATED: 9:07 am EST January 31, 2006
NEW CASTLE, Del. -- A 3-year-old girl remains in critical condition at Christiana Hospital.
Police said the incident happened on Oakmont Avenue at 10:30 a.m. in New Castle.
Police and paramedics responded after they received the report of a child who was attacked by a pit bull. When they arrived, they found Destiny Campbell suffering from massive head and shoulder injuries.
Police said the victim and her mother had driven to a home to pick up the child's grandmother. While inside the home, a dog, named Diamond, attacked the child. Police said that the attack was unprovoked.
A group of area residents responded to the calls for help from relatives and began beating the dog with sticks and broom handles.
The SPCA later responded to the scene and caught the dog, which had fled from the residents.
Witnesses said that the dog was generally peaceful and calmed down immediately after the attack.
"After this happened, the dog appeared to be polite. The tail was wagging. Even when the SPCA arrived and had to corral the dog with the lasso, the dog was still listening," said Trinidad Navarro, of the New Castle County Police Department.
The pit bull belonged to a family member, Turquoise Robinson. Police took her into custody on unrelated charges.
As she was being taken into custody on Monday afternoon, Robinson saw NBC 10 reporter Tim Furlong near a police car waiting to take her away.
"Why are they taking you away?" asked Furlong, as Robinson walked by.
Robinson then spit on the reporter as a cameraman taped the incident, and she responded, "that's why."
Police then charged Robinson with spitting on Furlong.
Robinson has not been charged in connection with the pit bull attack.
GEE! Not like there's any precedent for this or anything.
Good for you. I've had similar things said to me about my having had (and have) lab/chow mix dogs. The first one we had, who I lost in 2003, absolutley hated the next door neighbor. It took us all a long time to figure out why the dog hated the wife, but loved the husband and kids....but we finally figured it out.
When the dog was about a 6 month old puppy, and the youngest child next door was a toddler, mom swatted said toddler on the diaper for teasing the puppy through the fence..........that dog disliked that woman for the next 11 years.
And I apologize to you.......I misinterpretted your comment.
I would disagree with you that people that own pitbulls are normal. There is plenty on record to indicate that it's not just "people who've turned pitbulls into ferocious attack dogs and fighting dogs" that have problems with them.
IMO, if you own a pitbull, you should have to sign some sort of statement indicating that you're fully and personally responsible for anything that the dog does. Anything!
IMO it's reprehensible and remiss to own a pitbull. There are thousands of other dog breeds to buy that can offer security and other things important.
Yea...sorry, I get worked up about dogs. As I said WAY up the thread, I will not own Pit Bulls, nor do I know anyone qualified to train them. I am NOT a fan of them. I don't like them. That being said, they are a legitimate breed, for those that know how to handle them. Joe Blow the rookie would be well advised to steer clear of them......
Sorry if I offended....
Did you even bother to READ, let alone COMPREHEND what I said?
LOL! You reeled me in like a fish, a tactic I've been known to use myself......your sign up date should have been the key, but NO, SF falls for it hook, line AND sinker.
Regards.
Bull Mastiff actually... still a bulldog...
If the dog attacked someone, unprovoked, I would take responsibility for it and do what was required upto and including having it put down. My dogs are members of the family, but they are also a form of protection and will alert us when someone who doesn't belong shows up on our property.
BW, how was my neighbor a jerk? She reprimanded her child, a toddler at the time, by swatting him on the diaper for teasing an animal.
Actually, there was a manslaughter conviction in December for a Virginia woman whose three pit bulls killed an 82 year old woman walking her dog last year.
We've created lovable dogs, ship captains dogs, wolf hunting dogs, duck fetching dogs, pointing dogs, scenting dogs and even dogs that go down rabbit holes....each created for a purpose. The pit bull was created to kill in a arena....I find it disgusting, but they are legitimate...and those that know how to handle them, love them.
We cannot outlaw breeds simply because many that own them are ignorant thugs.......
