A few of us were thinking of starting an on-going FReeper diet and fitness thread. It would be a place where we could discuss weight loss, diet, exercise, getting back in shape, encourage each other in our efforts to get healthy, and celebrate our successes.
Any fitness or activity level. 100+ pounds to lose or no weight to lose. Those who have lost weight and kept it off, please share with us what has worked for you. Maybe you love a certain activity, biking, skiing, rock climbing, walking, running, whatever, tell us about how it helps you stay in shape. Share your weight loss success. Just a place to exchange ideas about all things exercise and diet related.
Don't be shy! As Freepers we spend a whole bunch of time in front of our computers and more then a few of us could do with some exercise and probably a little weight loss.
NO VERBAL ATTACKS! NO NAME CALLING! NO BASHING! THE OVERWEIGHT! NO NASTY PICTURES POSTED! This will be a thread about getting healthy and no attacks will be tolerated.
That's true; when my mother was fading away with cancer, the Sonic malteds I'd bring her would be the only thing she could get down and keep down.
Unfortunately, I'd pick up one for myself at the same time....

That is fantastic!
thank you, thank you
Can you be more specific? What about carbs, sugars & alcohol?
I'm sorry about your mom, Linda. But it was the same with my Aunt when she was dying of cancer. Malted milkshakes were the only thing she could keep down.
I love 'em too but will only have one if someone will share with me. Those calories :-)
After getting a cholesterol test and seeing mine was high I went on the South Beach Diet. 3 months later I had lost 35 pounds and my cholesterol is in the safe zone. I bought the book and read it. But never bought any of their food in the stores.
I simply quit eating the potatoes, rice, pasta and bread. I switched to eating lots of vegetables and lean meats and fish. I also daily eat a few low-carb wheat or regular wraps like you find around the mexican food in the store. I never was a sweet eater so that wasn't the problem. But the potatoes and that sort of food was getting me.
It's been over six months and I'm still at that same weight. If I exercised more and ate a bit less I'm sure I could loose more. At some point I will. About 10 more pounds and I'll be right where I want to be. But this diet is great for me. I eat as much as I want. I just don't eat certain things I know make me fat.
Holy cow! Great job!
In addition to pushing my luck, I also jump to conclusions and run off at the mouth!
Honestly, I have lost about 18 pounds over the last 2 years and at age 48 took up sprint format triathlons. I am not competitive, but I work hard and probably could pass for 47 instead of 50! LOL
Add me too....
Yes, it was a tough time for us.
However, on a lighter note, I notice that in the old days, if friends dropped pounds, we'd say, "you look great!" Now we're all getting to the age where, if someone drops a noticeable amount, we say, "Are you all right?" :)
Simple: calculated the number of calories I needed at that body weight and activity-level (3600), and came in about 1000 calories less. I was mildly hungry most of the day, but not starving (in fact, getting too hungry was always a bad idea -- I'd chow too hard when I got home). I'd always carry an apple or two for if the hunger pangs got too severe. But otherwise, I'd eat ANYTHING I wanted. Chicken wings, hot fudge sundaes, steak, whatever.
So long as I never exceeded my calorie budget.
After a while, you start viewing your calorie budget as money to spend. You start to get reluctant to spend all your calories on a plate of wings! You might, instead, just have 2 or 3.
I coupled that with a rigorous workout schedule, including walking and LOTS of weights. A friend told me that doing anything for 21 days makes it into a habit. It's true. Force yourself for the three weeks and then you are used to it and you miss it if you don't do it.
Summary: Cut calories and excercised.
That's fantastic! Maintaining it is the hardest part.
You can add me. I am losing the last of the baby weight now. I walk on the treadmill 45 minutes 5 days a week and do a Gunnar Peterson 30 minute Core video. I also had to finally start eating less. I am 35 and not in college sports anymore, so I should probably not eat like I still am. :)
I have been able to get away with very low fat content foods, but don't like to push it past 2 grams.
Done!
I've done WW three times and it does work! Hang in there. I had to do it the last two times because I went starch crazy during my pregnancies. Have recently found out from the doctor that I basically don't have a metabolism...even though I work out 5 days a week. So I am back to the WW plan which allows me to eat all my favorite foods so I don't feel like I'm missing out.
All you need is a GPS receiver and a sense of adventure. You can easily spend the entire day on the hunt. My wife and I pick out parks we want to go to, plot out on the caches in the park and off we go. You see some amazing sites along the way, the caching serves as a purpose, next thing you know you have walked 10 miles and haven't spent the day with your backside sticking out of the refrigerator.
Hey - now there's a fun idea... Pinging my brother and husband too! Geocaching FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions About Geocaching. We have a GPS device we're just learning to use, and I'm amazed at the number of caches nearby here. I've got some ideas on where we could plant some too :~D
"So long as I never exceeded my calorie budget...."
I think that's basically Richard Simmons' "deal a meal" principle. I had a friend who did that, and she'd be done eating for the day by 10.30 in the morning. :)
