A few of us were thinking of starting an on-going FReeper diet and fitness thread. It would be a place where we could discuss weight loss, diet, exercise, getting back in shape, encourage each other in our efforts to get healthy, and celebrate our successes.
Any fitness or activity level. 100+ pounds to lose or no weight to lose. Those who have lost weight and kept it off, please share with us what has worked for you. Maybe you love a certain activity, biking, skiing, rock climbing, walking, running, whatever, tell us about how it helps you stay in shape. Share your weight loss success. Just a place to exchange ideas about all things exercise and diet related.
Don't be shy! As Freepers we spend a whole bunch of time in front of our computers and more then a few of us could do with some exercise and probably a little weight loss.

Tell him to try to cut his carb intake. By carbs I mean avoid white flour (tell him to eat whole grain breads if he has to eat bread. Tell him to always check the carb amounts and get the one with the lowest carbs), regular pasta (tell him to try Dreamfields pasta it's delicious and tastes like regular pasta), white potatoes (try a small sweet potatoe instead), corn is a big no no, also makes sure he cuts sugar completely until its under control then he can limit it to maybe once a month under doctors orders of course. There are plenty of sugar free candies and icecream out there (but make sure you check the carbs because sugar free doesn't always mean low carb). Carbs are bad because they turn to sugar and keep your sugar levels higher for a longer period of time than regular sugar does. Breyers makes a low carb no sugar Heavenly Hash ice cream that is great. No fruit juices because they use too much fruit to make the juice. Tell him to try 1 piece of fruit instead of juice. Avoid watermellon (high sugar), grapes and pineapple are to be avoided. Those fruits are high in sugar. Most fast food including pizza is a no no because of the carb content. Its tough at first but the results are usually worth it. Peanuts are good snacks. Protein of course is good but watch the fat. MOST OF ALL EXERCISE! Walking is the easiest, and the best overall exercise and it doesn't cause any problems with your knees or ankles.

Yeah, at this point it is, "Are these crackers worth another 20 mins. of exercise?". Answer is NO, but I'm working on it.
no, I don't think we get it down here in Atlanta...and I dn't go to healthfood stores...If it's not at the regular grocery store I don't do it.
Anyone who is seriously interested in very low calorie dieting should look into CRONing. The fewer calories you eat, the more important nutrition becomes.

What I do is get frozen crab legs from the grocery store. You can steam them or nuke them and eating crab is sort of celebratory so its a nice end-of-week treat.
That is a great idea. Thanks. Even though crab legs are more expensive than salad, I could use it as a treat. Thanks so very much. You have made my day. I love salad, but two in a day that we're pretty much the same was a bit much. LOL.
You don't like fish? I love broiled or grilled Salmon, Tilapia or Catfish. You can use any kind of marinade for them and just about anything tastes great! We love shrimp and crab, too, so Gumbo is good, too, or just plain old boiled shrimp.
Incredible as it may seem, water is quite possibly the single most important catalyst for losing weight and keeping it off. Although most of us take it for granted, water may be the only true "magic potion" for permanent weight loss!
Water suppresses the appetite naturally and helps the body metabolize stored fat. Studies have shown that a decrease in water intake will cause fat deposits to increase, while an increase in water intake can actually reduce fat deposits.
Here's why: The kidneys can't function properly without enough water. When the kidneys don't work to capacity, some of their load is dumped onto the liver. One of the liver's primary functions is to metabolize stored fat into usable energy for the body. If the liver has to do some of the kidney's work, it can't operate at full throttle.
As a result, it metabolizes less fat, more fat remains stored in the body, and weight loss stops.
Drinking enough water is the best treatment for fluid retention. When the body gets less water, it perceives this as a threat to survival and begins to hold on to every drop.
Water is stored in extra cellular spaces (outside the cells). This shows up as swollen feet, legs and hands. Diuretics offer a temporary solution at best. They force out stored water along with some essential nutrients. Again, the body perceives a threat and will replace the lost water at the first opportunity. Thus, the condition quickly returns.
The best way to overcome the problem of water retention is to give the body what it needs... PLENTY OF WATER. Only then will the stored water be released. If you have a constant problem with water retention, excess salt may be to blame.
Your body will tolerate sodium only in a certain concentration. The more salt you eat, the more water your system retains to dilute it. But getting rid of unneeded salt is easy- just drink more water. As it's forced through the kidneys, it takes away excess sodium.
The overweight person needs more water than the thin one. Larger people have larger metabolic loads. Since we know that water is the key to fat metabolism, it follows that the overweight person needs more water. Water helps maintain proper muscle tone by giving muscles their natural ability to contract and by preventing dehydration.
It also helps to prevent the sagging skin that usually follows weight loss- shrinking cells are buoyed by water, which plumps the skin and leaves it clear, healthy, and resilient.
Water helps rid the body of waste. During weight loss, the body has a lot more waste to get rid of- all the metabolized fat must be shed. Again, adequate water helps flush out the waste.
So far, we've discovered some remarkable truths about water and weight loss... The body will not function properly without enough water and can't metabolize stored fat efficiently. Retained water shows up as excess weight. To get rid of excess water you must drink more water. Crazy, huh?
Drinking water is essential to weight loss. So... how much water is enough? On the average, a person should drink eight 8-ounce glasses every day. That's two quarts. However, the overweight person needs one additional glass for every 25 pounds of excess weight. The amount you drink also should be increased if you exercise briskly or if the weather is hot and dry. Water should preferably be cold- it's absorbed into the system more quickly than warm water.
Some evidence suggests that drinking cold water can actually help burn calories. When the body gets the water it needs to function optimally, its fluids are perfectly balanced. Once this happens you have reached the "breakthrough point."
What does this mean?
Endocrine-gland function improves. Fluid retention is alleviated as stored water is lost. More fat is used as fuel because the liver is free to metabolize stored fat. Natural thirst returns. And there is loss of hunger... almost overnight.
If you stop drinking enough water, your body fluids will be thrown out of balance again, and you may experience fluid retention, unexplained weight gain and loss of thirst. To remedy the situation you'll have to go back and force another "breakthrough." Remember, most women underestimate the importance of water and how it can affect everything from your health to your looks.
It depends on how you look at it. The Zyban for one thing will give you energy which may help with food in take. You might gain some, but once you are completely off cigaretts than you can start exercising to get some off and remember once those lungs are cleaned out (and they will be) you will be able to exercise at a longer time. I understand that Dana Reeve's death was tragic, but I mean I never heard of that before and she did NOT smoke. Whatever you decide Good luck.
Thanks. So you are saying no problems with the lower back on that machine. The only reason I ask is because it looks like it does not have much protection.
