Woman Mauled By Dog [Pitbull]

MOUNTLAKE TERRACE - A Tacoma woman is in serious condition at Harborview Medical Center after being mauled by a pit bull Friday afternoon.

Mountlake Terrace Police Chief Scott Smith said the woman in her 60s was walking by an apartment complex on 212th Street when the dog jumped over a small deck fence and attacked her.

"It was really awful," said Kathryn Goddard, who saw the attack. The dog "just wouldn't let go and kept shaking the lady."

Kathryn's mom, Dawn Goddard, also saw it happen. "I looked down right below my window and was watching this dog chewing on this woman's head," she said.

Smith said the dog dragged the woman about 50 feet down a hill and was clawing at and biting her head and legs for several minutes.

Dawn said the dog's owner was frantically trying to get control of the pit bull. "She was beating on the dog, she was doing everything she could possibly do to get that dog off of this other woman," she said. "That dog was not going to listen to anyone or any thing."

A resident in the apartment complex called 911 and police arrived and managed to distract the dog and get it to stop biting the woman.

But when the dog charged at police an officer shot the dog once. "Clearly this dog was going to attack the officer," Smith said. "So the officer did shoot the dog."

The dog ran back to its owner, who was able to get the pit bull on a leash, but Smith said the dog then began attacking the owner.

Snohomish County animal control officers arrived and took the dog to a veterinarian where it was euthanized after the owner gave permission.

The dog's owner was taken to a local hospital to be treated for bites. Smith said the woman who was attacked and dragged was expected to recover from her injuries and would be spending the night at Harborview in Seattle.

The pit bull was about two years old, and Smith said there were no previous reports of problems with the animal.

One thing JRs and Amstaffs seem to share is an uncanny ability to perceive precisely the time to lick to coincide with that off guarded moment when your mouth is open a crack.

You are absolutely correct about that one. :^)

I grabbed the photo from a website I found. Just click on the image to go there- a great Boston web site!

My first dog was a Boston, a male named Bobo. I was about ten years old. My daughters insisted upon getting a Boston based upon photos of Bobo several years ago, and now we are once again hooked on them. We have four among us. Great breed. Very entertaining.

Bostons are a trip and a half. Janey's best buddy in puppyhood was a Boston, and he was a total sweetheart.

You may want to take a look at the below video - it has a very Boston moment.

A friend of mine had a pittbull. Here is what he says to people that have them and think they will never turn vicious.

Mine cost me over $15,000. I used to say the dog was gentle as a kitten, would never hurt anyone. Then it attacked an 8 year old girl. She was not hurt bad but the dog pit her face and the $15,000 was for the bill to fix the scare. Had I not gotten to the dog, it would have kept attacking her. She did nothing to provoke it. I shot the dog myself.

Of course, I paraphrase. But that is pretty darn close to the way he put it when I raised my objections about pittbulls. I did not even know he had had one.

The only way to be a proper owener of a pittbull is not to have them in a neighborhood. That's because it would be cruel to keep it chained up 24 hours a day.

The dogs are like a time bomb. You never know when or why they go off. You are a fool if you do not know that.

It has nothing to do with the owner. Every pittbull attack story has a quote, "gee, it was such a nice dog. I never would have believed it would bite that little boy/girl, chew off their nose, ear and half their cheek, all while I was beating it over the head with a hammer. Really, I did everything I could to stop it."

Ban all Pittbulls! No, correction. Kill them all.

You never know when or why they go off.

Yes you do. They go off when they assume the roll of pack leader. NO dog, regardless of breed, should ever be allowed to become the pack leader. No chaining necessary.

I see. So if it scares you it's OK to ban it. Great reasoning, I bet assault weapons scare you also....Boo!

Funny how people without a legitimate retort to an argument will (1) try to asign a position to the opposition that that the opposition does not hold or (2) try to paint the opposition as having a phobia.

Because you support Pitbull ownership should I suggest that you are afraid of Gay people. Your argument makes as much sense as that.

Please, we are on FR. You are not supposed to argue like a liberal.

Dang am I glad to have seen that video of the pitbull attacking the kids. Anyone that watches that video and still thinks these dog should be allowed deserves to be mauled by one.

The dog thought it was playing with the kids. And even after being shot by the police officer, it came back for more.

Thanks for the link. Definitely educational.

Next time you see the dog, throw it a nice hamburger with all the proper ingrediants. Solve your problem now.

Maybe require pet owners to carry pet responsibility insurance.

Yea, great idea. The kid with his face chewed off will be real comforted knowing the owner of the dog has insurance for the reconstructive surgery.

You missed the point but that was expected. High premiums would cut down on the number of people owning such dogs and those who did would be buying pure bred stock lines not bred for fighting.

"The subject is: Should Pittbulls be banned in neighborhoods? We can talk about little Jack Russell Terriers later."

"The subject is: Should SUV's be banned? We can talk about pickups and passenger sedans later."

The subject is: Should assault rifles be banned? We can talk about lever and bolt action rifles later."

The subject is: Should cigarette smoking be banned in public areas? We can talk about private residences later.

The subject is: Should we round up the Jews? We can talk about the Catholics, Gypsies, Blacks, later....

You'd think by now people would know a camel's nose under the tent when they saw one.

There is a lot of ignorance in this thread. A lot of people who obviously have not done any reading up on what they're talking about. In tests done on over 100 different breeds of dogs to test the likelihood of them biting someone pit bulls were 4th.........from the bottom. Labradors had a higher likelihood than the pit bull did. Right now in this country pit bulls are in the top percentile in popularity. They're popular because they look tough and can protect property mostly. When that's the reason people get them yes there's going to be problems. Those OWNERS should be in trouble. They should have serious penalties and reprecussions for what they've done to those dogs. That dog should have never been in a place where the fence was low enough to jump, and shouldn't have been unleashed. A report by the U.S. Postal office said that the dogs they've had the most reports of bites with was the Pomeranian, pit bulls weren't even on their list. Labradors and the golden retriever were. Pit bulls can be awesome family dogs. It's not bullshit I've seen it. I have never seen so much patience in a dog dealing with a baby as the Pitt that I'm familiar with. She let an 11 month old baby climb all over her, pull her ears, her teeth, and she didn't even get up to get away. Just licked the baby's face. When the baby went to spend time with a grandma for the weekend, the Pitt kept climbing into her crib because she missed her. I don't think banning the breed is the answer, because pit bulls are a smart loyal breed. I think making the penalties on the owners much stronger would be much more effective. I'd also like everyone to keep in mind that the term pit bull incorporates 3 different breeds of dog, and that usually their statistics are compiled together. Which is like grouping the Labrador and golden retriever together. Also pit bull attacks are often mislabeled. A lot of people say it was a pit bull that attacked them, but when the actual dog is found it's not even close to a pit bull, but by then the news is already out. There's a lot to look into, and a lot to educate yourself on before you decide that the whole breed is bad. I know better, I've spent the last 2 years educating myself. I rescued a baby pit bull from a neighbor and have never once regretted it. She's the smartest, most loving, loyal dog I've ever had. I have severe social phobia and anxiety, and I'm slowly getting better, I owe a lot of that to her, there's times in my life I wouldn't have made it through without her knowing just when to put her head in my lap, or her constant antics making me laugh. Below are some pictures of Cinnamon my pitt, her with the baby, she carefully laid next to her because she was nervous about her falling, her in the crib after the baby left, I put the blanket on her to make it cute, but she put herself in there, her cuddled up with our other dog and my brother, who she'd just met that day for the 1st time, and the last one of me holding her. I'd had a rough day that day and had been crying and she jumped up to be held to make me laugh. "Sure, but why stop at pitbulls. Let's ban Rottweilers, German Shepards and Dobermans also...and don't forget the Mastiffs and Rhodesian Ridgeback. I've also heard Jack Russell terriers are vicious as heck...."

One less Jack Russell to worry about:

The Pit also killed a Rottweiler Shepherd mix during the same attack...impressive.
