Woman Mauled By Dog [Pitbull]

MOUNTLAKE TERRACE - A Tacoma woman is in serious condition at Harborview Medical Center after being mauled by a pit bull Friday afternoon.

Mountlake Terrace Police Chief Scott Smith said the woman in her 60s was walking by an apartment complex on 212th Street when the dog jumped over a small deck fence and attacked her.

"It was really awful," said Kathryn Goddard, who saw the attack. The dog "just wouldn't let go and kept shaking the lady."

Kathryn's mom, Dawn Goddard, also saw it happen. "I looked down right below my window and was watching this dog chewing on this woman's head," she said.

Smith said the dog dragged the woman about 50 feet down a hill and was clawing at and biting her head and legs for several minutes.

Dawn said the dog's owner was frantically trying to get control of the pit bull. "She was beating on the dog, she was doing everything she could possibly do to get that dog off of this other woman," she said. "That dog was not going to listen to anyone or any thing."

A resident in the apartment complex called 911 and police arrived and managed to distract the dog and get it to stop biting the woman.

But when the dog charged at police an officer shot the dog once. "Clearly this dog was going to attack the officer," Smith said. "So the officer did shoot the dog."

The dog ran back to its owner, who was able to get the pit bull on a leash, but Smith said the dog then began attacking the owner.

Snohomish County animal control officers arrived and took the dog to a veterinarian where it was euthanized after the owner gave permission.

The dog's owner was taken to a local hospital to be treated for bites. Smith said the woman who was attacked and dragged was expected to recover from her injuries and would be spending the night at Harborview in Seattle.

The pit bull was about two years old, and Smith said there were no previous reports of problems with the animal.

Cockfighting, only with pit bulls against each other.

Errrr....yes. That is why they are called "Pit Bulls", they were breed to fight in the pit.

Sure, but why stop at pitbulls. Let's ban Rottweilers, German Shepards and Dobermans also...and don't forget the Mastiffs and Rhodesian Ridgeback. I've also heard Jack Russell terriers are vicious as heck....

Except for the Rottweilers, the other dogs do not have anything close to the vicious nature of a Pittbull. Let's not take the argument to the extreme. In fact, let's stay on subject.

The subject is: Should Pittbulls be banned in neighborhoods? We can talk about little Jack Russell Terriers later.

An old friend of mine had an American Staff about 30 years ago. Sweetest dog ever. One day, while he was on the phone, Daisy attacked him for no reason. Latched onto his thigh and wouldn't let go. He killed her with an aluminum baseball bat. If his friend on the phone hadn't called the police, he would have died from lose of blood. He was unconsious when EMT arrived. 82 stitches.

But that is the problem. There are efforts underway to ban the dogs I listed (except for the Terriers). It's a slippery slope FRiend. How many dog bites occur in this country everyday and how many do you read about that don't involve PitBulls? I don't own PitBulls and frankly never will, but I do own Rottweilers and German shepards. Banning any breed will be a mistake.

No, banning pittbulls will not be a mistake. Sorry, but just becuse you worry about not being able to own a Rottweiler is no reason the rest of us must put up with Pittbulls.

The slippery slope appears to me to be your reasoning. And I would never advocate a ban on German Sheppards...althought there was a Rott across the street that should not have been in the neighborhood.

I shot a Pit Bull that had attacked a neighbor's Beagle. A crowd had assembled, ( twenty people, all with cellphones ). I was limited somewhat in my shot placement, (not wanting to hit gawkers or the Beagle).

I hit the dog with three rounds from my .357, (middle of his back) . I suppose I should have kept firing. Anyways, I got the Pit Bull to drop the Beagle. Another neighbor, ( a off duty cop), ventilated the Pit Bull with seven 9mm rounds, ( through his ribcage/lungs ). The dog was dead within a matter of a minute or two after that.

Wow. I have seen buffalo drop with fewer rounds...is this typical for a PitBull?

A heart warming video of a cop shooting a switched "ON" Pit Bull while it goes after a kid.

I have a feeling that a few of the Pro Pit Bull types are involved in breeding and selling these dangerous animals. There's big money to be made with the high demand for the baddest dog around.

But it's all about how you raise the dog, not about the breed dontcha know!

Gotta wonder about the 'training' of any dog that would attack its owner.

I see. So if it scares you it's OK to ban it. Great reasoning, I bet assault weapons scare you also....Boo!

Well, go shoot your dog and then see how friendly he is...let us know how it turns out.

The owner in this case did not shoot his dog.

Question: What kind of person intentionally purchases a dog with a reputation for viciousness?

Answer: The kind of person most likely to be be an irresponsible dog owner

I bred and raised dobermans for many years. None of the people who bought my dogs were irresponsible. I checked them out with background checks and spoke to their veterinarians before selling to them. None of my dogs ever were brought back for being viciousness. Some people just love the bred of dog and can be responsible. We have a pit running around my neighborhood which scares me as I have a small child. The owner has been warned to keep her fenced but she claims the dog is a "baby" who wouldnt hurt a soul. When we see her loose again animal control will be called.

This is the procedure the responsible breeders I know follow.
In addition they have written contracts with the buyers stipulating the buyers responsibilities and allowing for reclaiming the dog in case of breach.

When we see her loose again animal control will be called.

I keep animal control on my cell phone speed dial.
I drive for a living and I report any dog I see running loose/unleashed.
A dog not controlled is an 'accident' waiting to happen.

Thanks to the Pit Bull owner you now know what frontier living in the 1800's was like. Always carrying rifles and being vigilant for wolves, grizzlies and cougars. Get a gun and be prepared to use it in case the dog's prey drive trigger goes off.

I should not have called pittbull owner idiots. But, I can not think of another word for them...

In this case I think your well justified in calling the owner a idiot...

"...the dog jumped over a small deck fence..."

He did not have control of his dog, indicative of an idiot.

That thing should be muzzled so that the pit bull owners don't feel discriminated against!
