Suspect arrested in JonBenet death

A man arrested in Thailand is being held in connection with the slaying of JonBenet Ramsey, law enforcement officials said today. Federal officials familiar with the case, who spoke with the Associated Press on condition of anonymity, said the man was being held in Bangkok on unrelated sex charges.

A source close to the case identified the suspect as one-time resident of Conyers, Ga., and said he was a school teacher.

The source said that authorities had been focusing on him for some time and that Patsy Ramsey had been made aware prior to her death on June 24 that his arrest was being pursued.

The girl was found beaten and strangled in the basement of the family’s home in Boulder, Colo., on Dec. 26, 1996.

Law enforcement officials from Boulder were flying to Bangkok to present Thai authorities with documents in the slaying of the 6-year-old beauty pageant contestant, officials in Washington said. They asked to remain anonymous pending an announcement in Colorado.

The girl’s parents, Patsy and John Ramsey, had been under an "umbrella of suspicion" in JonBenet’s death. The Ramseys said an intruder killed their daughter. A grand jury investigation in Boulder ended with no indictments, and no arrests had been made in the case.

Patsy Ramsey died in July.

In 2003, U.S. District Judge Julie Carnes in Atlanta concluded that the evidence she reviewed suggested an intruder killed JonBenet. That opinion came with the judge’s decision to dismiss a libel and slander lawsuit against the Ramseys by a freelance journalist, who the Ramseys had named as a suspect in their daughter’s murder. The Boulder district attorney at the time said she agreed with Carnes’ declaration.

Well, it is spelled with a K. Karr. So all the Carr theories are as obsolete as the Fishtalk theory.

The investigation was botched to begin with...the original investigators never looked beyond the parents. The crime scene was not properly supervised. There was error after error. This teacher was from Georgia; I wonder if he knew this child. I keep hearing this guy has confessed. The ranson note could have been written in order to confuse the police. This guy could have planned to take Jon Benet, and killed her accidentally who knows?

I agree that class envy played a role in the reaction to the Ramseys... so, when did class envy become popular in this country? It used to be the American Dream.

When I was young, the working class all hoped to become
rich one day ('rich' being a relative term). Now you find those who were born into the upper socio-economic bracket trying to distance themselves (if not their bank accounts) from being seen as wealthy. Howard Dean/Lamont, even Bush and Frist do it.

I just don't get it ...I still want to be seriously rich and, if I ever get there, you will not hear one word of apology. Ever.

I hope so too. I can not imagine the horror of losing your child and having people believe you did this vile thing. Also, the police stopped looking for the killer-they were so convinced of the Ramsey's guilt.

Where did you see it listed? I have only heard it on TV.

Exactly. It's very weird. I'm afraid we're not doing a good job of explaining how capitalism works to the young'uns and have not been doing so for way too long.

Pollyannaish is exactly right in his/ her assessment in my opinion. Nevermind that John Ramsey's wealth was built on his own hard work & that he started his eventually successful business in the garage of his very middle class neighborhood.

A lot of people are jumping on the media-- I think a lot more people need to look at themselves and why they were so quick to assume that these people killed their child based on the flimsy "evidence" they had.

In thailand, the sex trade is huge and you can get what you want.

I was warned by my NCOs to take the long way home from the bar at which we were drinking. The short way went through the section that had young Thai men dressed up as women. The number of bars and strip clubs with women was too numerous to count.

I know there is some great places to go diving in Thailand like where the Tsunami happened. However, too many Westerners go to places like Pattaya, which means these bars and strip clubs have to go out and find workers for these places. The workers come from small villages to help raise money for their families.

The benefit of going with the Army was I had translators who could speak Laotian and Thai since they were similiar. It helped so we find out where the average Thai goes to do nomal things in Thai other than visit the bars, and strip clubs. After a couple of days in Pattaya, I was ready to go home.

It was an interesting place and I did want to visit some Buddhist temples

The greatest irony, in my estimation, is that if the Ramsey's had been "celebrities" they would automatically been exonerated in the public's mind because we "know" them.

I am astonished at how completely the media of all kinds distorts information and world view.
