COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The Rev. Ted Haggard admitted Friday he bought methamphetamine and received a massage from a gay prostitute who claims he was paid for drug-fueled trysts by the former head of the National Association of Evangelicals.

"I bought it for myself but never used it," Haggard told reporters gathered outside his home. "I was tempted, but I never used it."

Haggard, 50, said he never had sex with Mike Jones, a 49-year-old Denver man who raised the allegations this week. Haggard said he received a massage from Jones after being referred to him by a Denver hotel.

"Is the guy running for office or something? I heard Rush talking a bit about it, but still don't get why MSNBC is making a big deal out it!!"

Because he is a Christian Pastor and any cheap shot they can take at a Christian leader is not to be passed by.

I don't know the guy. I am saddened though and find no joy that he may have done this. We are all sinners though. If true, he needs to do the honorable thing, and come clean, apologize and then accept the consequences of his actions. Suicide isn't honorable.

Another reason this story is out there is to depress the evangelical vote. I've already had to preach to a relative about this.

“He has willingly and humbly submitted to the authority of the board of overseers, and will remain on administrative leave during the course of the investigation,” the e-mail stated.

Willingly, as in when there is no other way out. So, he's still being paid, too.

Of course that is part of why the press is doing this and all the more reason why we should not care! My disgust for the media has now hit an all time low!!

Perhaps he gave it to someone else who used it, in exchange for ???

I think you might just have something there.

Can someone tell me why this story matters? Is the guy running for office or something? I heard Rush talking a bit about it, but still don't get why MSNBC is making a big deal out it!!

________

They think it will keep those crazy "evangelicals" at home for the elections, since they'll be so disheartened.

The probably think all the Christians will sit around in sackcloth on a pile of ashes and speak in tongues instead of voting. After all, that's what "they" do, isn't it?

I was wondering the same thing. Who is this guy and why do I care if he picked up a male prostitute.

half a dozen people who looked to this man as an inspiring example of Christ are now sullen, disappointed and lost.

C'mon, it's way more than that. More people will now mock and reject the Word of God than ever tuned into his show.

I refuse to believe that God wants His ministers to be Rolexed and blow-dried and silk-suited on TV, milking pious little old ladies of their life's savings. This guy, and most like him, are of the Devil.

Yup. I might. Now, what could you trade meth for? I'm guessing sex. Lots of hookers use meth.

This is just an ugly little story. Will it get uglier? Nope. Haggard's headed for the rehab clinic for a month or so, just like all the other public figures who mess up. By the time he gets out, this will all have been replaced by some other scandal.

The folks who are really suffering in this ugly mess are those in the congregation of this tool's church. They've been listening to this man on the pulpit. They believed what he said. Now? Well...they're going to have to rethink. Some will lose their faith over this stupid idiot's inability to control whatever it is he can't control.

As you can see, I'm a non-Christian, but many people I love dearly are Christians, and stories like this make me want to puke, to be quite frank.

I met Billy Graham once. I got to talk to him for about 15 minutes. Now, there was an evangelical Christian about whom there was never a hint of scandal. He wouldn't even meet with a woman without a third person present. He did not want to even have anyone able to say that there was even a whisper of scandal about his life.

He was a rare man. He was a terrific speaker. He was a genuinely decent man of religion.

Sadly, many others in his profession are not as he was.

And he would have been the first to tell you that he was not without sin.

And his fellow, to use the term loosely, preachers. Many people see this story and it gives them fuel to their theory that all big church preachers are phoney.

Yes, Graham would have said that. No doubt he sometimes had the sin of pride, or of anger, or of one of the many ways people fail. He didn't fall prey to the sins of the flesh, though, I'm pretty sure.

It was a real pleasure to talk with him. I found him to be a brilliant man, and a humble one, too.

That's a pity. Some of them, no doubt, are phoney, but I'm sure not all.

He is an important religious figure in this country.

Doesn't say much about the state of religion here, does it?

I posted an article about the NAE not too long ago, and it had to do with some liberal position or democratic party support that they had announced. I knew they had gotten on the wrong track.

It's interesting how this comes out right before the election, and it's a liberal EVANGELICAL who is at fault.

That needs to be pointed out clearly.

At the same time, even after we become Christian, the flesh can defeat us. "The things I want to do, I don't; and the things I don't want to do, I do. Who shall deliver me from this body of death? I thank God for my Lord Jesus Christ."

"If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us."
