Stapledon wrote so long ago that it was even before my time. His specialty was very large scale stories, written in prose dense as Christmas fruitcake, whose characters were entire civilizations.Great. I'm unknown and tedious.

I've heard of Smith but don't think I've ever read anything he wrote. I don't go THAT far back. :) It's Full spectrum Space Opera... the Lensman series, Triplanetary, the Skylark of Valeron series... all fun stuff based on no science at all.

Better RAH than Al Gore (if Earth in the Balance doesn't qualify as SF, I don't know what does). Given its total lack of science, I would put it in the fantasy genre.
