A retired decorated Jersey City police officer working for the department as a civilian employee died after shooting himself yesterday in what police say likely was a gun-cleaning accident.
At 11:50 a.m., Robert J. McGillis Jr., 53, was found dead in the Emergency Services Unit offices where he worked on Route 440, Police Chief Tom Comey said at a news conference yesterday afternoon.

Took out mag but forgot the one up the spout ? Do Glocks fire with no mag ?
Yes, no mag disconnect on a Glock.
And you do need to pull the trigger before removing the slide.
None the less, you don't point the Glock at your chest and pull the trigger. I could understand a leg wound from careless gun handling, but this sounds like a suicide cover-up.
Hmm, how many people remove a slide with the muzzle pointing at them ? I don't !!
I agree, something here isn't right.
if this is a suicide cover up to collect benefits, guess who gets stuck with the tab.
A retired cop who carried a revolver his entire career and had recently been given a Glock?
Left or right handed, in stripping a Glock it's completely counterintuitive to do it with the muzzle pointed at your chest. He shoulda stuck to his Police Positive or Model 10.
From a matter of personal preference, having anything to do with a Glock is counterintuitive to me. I'm Colt/Browning guy, who has recently developed a thing for CZs...
Actually, I can picture how it might happen. When I remove the slide from my G19, I hold the gun in my right hand with my thumb on the backstrap and my fingers around the slide. That makes it easy to squeeze the slide back just enough so that I can work the release tabs with my left hand. From that position, I can picture him seeing the trigger in the charged position and swinging his thumb around into the trigger guard to pull it back while holding the slide in his left hand. (Or the other way around if he was a wronghander.) The barrel would go from pointing down and away to straight at his chest.
All it takes is a split second for a lapse in gun safety training to ruin your whole day.
"I'm Colt/Browning guy"
The Glock is based on the Browning short recoil mechanism.
What was his relationship with the Clintons???
Also, career wise it would seem this guy had a decent gig, not the usual LEO grind by a stretch.
Glocks can bite if mishandled, have to wonder if this guy had any training or if gunhandling skills were just assumed given his background?
As someone already pointed out, the Glock striker must be forward in order to remove the slide, only way to do that is to pull the trigger. If it's loaded, it will go off, mag in or out.
...after they were place there by co-worker.
Revolver man myself, but have a fondness for Govt. models in .38 Super. The CZ's a nice piece.
.38 Super is a cool round...I always thought of it as one of the most underrated chamberings, right alongside the .41 Magnum. Both are very versatile rounds and I'm amazed how many people I talk to haven't even heard of them.
I don't like plastic guns.
I like the feel of cold steel in my hands.
These two semi-autos do me just fine for now.
SIG P239 Custom SAS 40. & SW 4006.
My bride wants a SIG P232 stainless as her Mother's Day present.
A sad ending for officer McGillis.
I Googled his name and found a news blurb about a son just home from Iraq duty.
