Mars is farther from the Sun than the Earth. Much less radiation reaches Mars. GW wackos don’t want us to know this.

Mars does not have the mass to maintain it’s atmosphere.

I see the folly in your thinking: OBVIOUSLY the mars landers are made by Chevrolet, and have single-handedly pollluted the atmosphere of Mars. And if you recall, Mars lacks the AlGore, which means nothing is keeping it from spiralling out of control.

Wow! I can see Al Gore on Mars selling carbon credits to the little green men. I wonder how they deal with con men? Here we give ‘em an Oscar and a Nobel Prize.

Hmm. Interesting article. I didn’t know about the presence of methane. Raises some intriguing possibilities.

Tragedy! Where did all that CO2 on Mars come from? There must have been some civilization there that burned fossil fuels, caused global warming and destroyed their planet. Oh the martianity!

Probably it’s because the climate modeler’s partial differential equations had the wrong boundary values. There’s a paper, reported in another thread on FR, by a Hungarian climate modeler that corrected the error in the boundary value term, got complete agreement with Earth data, and then as a test, got complete agreement with Martian data, for the past few decades (which the AGW folk don’t get w/o putting in bells and whistles to fix the model).

Of course with the correct boundary value, it turns out there is a negative feedback mechanism that prevents a runaway greenhouse effect.

Well, lets see, it looks like Mars gets about 42% of the sun’s energy that that earth does per square meter (93 * 93) / (143 * 143) = 0.422954668

And it has much less atmosphere

But the average temperature on Mars is 227 degrees K compared to 287 degrees k on Earth.. So something is keeping Mars warmer than it would seem it should be.

The Mars atmosphere is about 7 millibars of pressure, about the same as the atmosphere of Earth at 100,000 feet. Remarkably, the temps of Mars are very similar to Earth temps at 100,000 feet.

Let’s throw Venus on the table too which is about 96% CO2 as well but has a surface temperature of 450C (435C more than Earth.)

It is clear that density of the atmosphere is more relevant than the percentage of CO2 or even the total amount of C02. Venus has about 250,000 times more CO2 by weight than Earth and the overall pressure at the surface is 92 times that of Earth.

Venus’s CO2 would equate to about 15 doublings that of Earth so the surface temperature should only be about 22C to 67C higher than Earth according to global warming theory (versus the actual 430C.) So Hansen’s global warming theory does not work for Venus either.

Mars has nearly no atmosphere. It could support a somewhat heavier atmosphere where H2O and CO2 might have a slight greenhouse effect.
