Pop Stars to Descend on Democratic Convention to Party and Politic (DNC rock and hip hop concerts)

A certain amount of celebrity glow has long been a part of both political parties’ gatherings. But thanks in part to the youthful charisma of Senator Barack Obama, the presumptive nominee, the Democratic convention, which begins on Monday in Denver, is shaping up as an unlikely hot spot for the music world, with multiplatinum rappers, indie-rock scenesters, D.J.’s and Jennifer Lopez arriving by the van- and private planeload to perform, rally or schmooze with the political elite.

“It’s the Sundance Film Festival for politicos,” said Laura Dawn, the cultural director of MoveOn.org, who also happens to sing with Moby...

Kanye West will be there on Wednesday for a party sponsored by the Recording Industry Association of America and One, the antipoverty campaign founded by Bono. That night the Black Eyed Peas will perform for the Creative Coalition. Fall Out Boy will play for Rock the Vote on Monday, and the reunited Rage Against the Machine will do a free show at the Denver Coliseum on Wednesday.

Those are just the big shows. Members of the band Death Cab for Cutie are booked for acoustic performances, Moby will be spinning records at late-night parties, and various outdoor shows will align rock and hip-hop acts with on-the-ground activists.

“People feel comfortable expressing themselves in an artistic way at this convention more than they ever have,” said Kimball Stroud, a founder of the Impact Film Festival, which will screen documentaries at both conventions. “I don’t recall another convention where hip-hop artists were embraced like they are.”

...One of the biggest musical events in Denver will be the Rage Against the Machine concert, part of an antiwar rally by Iraq Veterans Against the War and Tent State, a group of student protesters. Eight thousand tickets will be given away by lottery...

Rock and Roll ping.

Article didn’t mention the concerts from Bon Jovi and Bruuuuce at the DNC Convention before Obama’s appearance.

The man can’t get into the White House without the dominant media culture giving him a push. Bread and circuses for all, suckers.

Get as many videos as possible of that RATM concert out to the public. When they see the fact that those guys are nothing more than a bunch of Orange County Che-worshipping suburban Communist-wannabes, screaming Marxist slogans, they’ll see ‘em as the true face of the Democratic Party.

Hey, maybe Barack’ll show up and do some time in the mosh pit to “Guerilla Radio”!

Good.

Americans - voting Americans, at least - know that music stars are imbeciles. Let them be another albatross of association for Hussein, the Chosen One.

I’ll take Jimmy Vaughan at Ron Paul’s alternate convention over all of the idiots combined.

I wonder what the carbon footprint of all these entertainers and celebrities traveling and staying in Denver will be. They are not needed to be participants in the convention, and they could endorse Obama or work for him in other ways. Clearly they are wasteful people and not thinking of their carbon footprints by doing this.

How much is the carbon footprint of a rock and roll concert? Even if done for the best of intentions, aren’t we supposed to cut back our footprints?

Speaking of which, why didn’t the Democrats put solar panels on the roof of Pepsi Center and run this whole show solar? The carbon footprint of this whold damn convention certainly exceeds the guidelines of the Gore Institute for Global Warming.

I believe the extreme leftist RATM is the most appropriate group to play at the Dem confab. It’s the most anti-American and free market group out there...just like most of the Dem delegates gathering at the convention.

Hip hop stars on the stage. That is ALL the geriatric set needs to see. My MIL’s friends are already scared of these guys. Go a little Gangsta...it will do wonders for the red neck vote!

I admit to listening to RATM sometimes. I bought their self-titled album on cassette back in ‘93 when I was in HS. I wasn’t too political back then except for listening to Rush Limbaugh. Yeah, I totally hate RATM’s political views, but I just like cranking it up loud when they come on the radio, particularly “Bulls On Parade”.

"...suburban Communist-wannabes, screaming Marxist slogans..."

That is a great description of Obama!
