Roots Or Shoots?
Because they had no root they withered away. —Matthew 13:6

In the life of trees, one key to survival is having more roots than shoots. In his book Oak: The Frame of Civilization,, author William Bryant Logan says, “If a tree puts on a lot of top growth and few roots, it is liable to be weak-wooded and short-lived. . . . If a tree puts down a great deal of roots and adds shoots more slowly, however, it is liable to be long-lived and more resistant to stress and strain.”

People and organizations can be like trees. The rise to prominence is exhilarating, but anything that puts up shoots faster than it puts down roots is fragile and in danger of breaking, falling, or dying.

Jesus used a similar analogy in His parable of the sower. People who hear the Word and receive it joyfully are like seed sown on stony places; they spring up quickly but endure only a short time because they have no roots (Matt. 13:6,20-21).

Roots aren’t at all glamorous, but they are the source of our strength. If our roots go deep in the knowledge of God (Jer. 9:24) and our lives are “hidden with Christ in God” (Col. 3:3), we’ll be strong, resistant to blight, and more likely to survive the storms of adversity.

How deep are your roots?

Lord, keep me from being envious of the beautiful and the seemingly powerful. May I use Your resources to put down roots that will make me strong rather than growing branches to make me attractive. Amen.

The roots of stability come from being grounded in God’s Word and prayer.

I saw that! Lori and her little Maltese have such a bond, don't they? And that little Maltese was so brave! Then, last night, Lori didn't have to scream, yell and threaten her dog to get her to stay through the distractions of the other contestants. There was a communication between the two of them that went beyond words. Victoria, the judge, was sure impressed.

She was impressed. I was, too! That's a beautiful little dog as well as being VERY well-trained. And he definitely has an extremely close bond with Lori.

The only problem I am having with the show is that it does put stress on the dogs, and that bothers me. Like that other competition that involved trust. Jumping off a platform into mid-air is not normal behavior and being forced to stay in a circle while others offered them treats and tried to call the dog to them, seems just mean to me. I was so happy to see that one guy release his dog from that tree stump because he felt he had made him stay too long, even though it meant he wouldn't win that competition. My dogs are very well behaved and obedient, but I just don't think I could put them through those kinds of challenges in order to win a competition.

I hear that. I didn't like those two competitions. It was stressful for the dogs to take that leap off such a tall platform. My favorite team is Travis and Presley. That dog, even so young, has such an intelligent face, and he and his owner are doing an amazing job - I understand they had none of the training before the show that some of the others had, so kudos to both of them for getting this far. I really want them to win the whole thing. :)

Thanks, and no I won’t stay away. Your thread has the soul food we all need, God gives us beauty and we don’t take time to find it, many times. Thank you for the beauty you create, stay safe and happy.

I'm glad you'll still visit, and honestly, I understand about the pings to the huge graphics. It's tough when you can't open your comment page because it's so full of graphics - some of them really big ones. I had to ask to be taken off the ping list of a couple of daily threads because there were so many graphics in the main ping.

(I copied your post so the others who post Amy's daily welcomes could see how much you enjoy their offerings, too)

Thank you, granny.

Amy, I should have asked (or offered) if you wanted me to post today’s Wear Red Friday thread, because I know you are covered up with the FR picnic for tomorrow.

~~Good Morning to Amy's Place~~

I took this yesterday late afternoon. I still have much to learn. There's a class here I could go to that teaches all about digital cameras, etc. but haven't decided if I will attend one of them or not.

"Wear Red" Friday
You will soon see a lot of people wearing Red on Fridays. Here's why..... The Americans, who support our troops, are the silent majority. We are not "organized" to reflect who we are, or to reflect what our opinions are. Many Americans, like yourself, and all their friends, simply want to recognize that Americans support our troops. Our idea of showing our solidarity and support for our troops is starting Friday and continuing on each and every Friday, until this is over, that every red-blooded American who supports our young men and women, WEAR SOMETHING RED.

Word of mouth, press, TV -- let's see if we can make the United States, on any given Friday, a sea of red much like a home football game at a University. If every one of our memberships share this with other acquaintances, fellow workers, friends, and neighbors, I guarantee that it will not be long before the USA will be covered in RED - and make our troops know there are many people thinking of their well-being. You will feel better all day Friday when you wear Red! So let's get the word out and lead by example; wear RED on Fridays.

SUPPORT OUR TROOPS! WE LIVE IN THE LAND OF THE FREE, BECAUSE OF THE BRAVE. FOR US, THEIR BLOOD RUNS RED!! GOD BLESS AMERICA.

From an email on June 10th, 2006 - the author is unknown.
