What's the alope and area you wont to plant a garden?

It's still early but as soon as there's a thaw, clear out the area getting rid of the maples and rubbish trees giving light to the clearing. It helps if you can broadcast annual rye (which is cheap) over the area, then till it under just before summer starts. You'll add Nitrogen and organic matter to the soil ahead of time. (BTW, I'm not an organic farmer.)

Got any wood ashes from the fireplace or any other source? Save 'em and spread 'em. This'll help condition the soil and add P and K to the mixture.

If you can, take a soil sample to the local college ag dept. or county agent. The readout will give you numbers which will help you buying admendments. (This is Step 1)

Any other gardening books? “Carrots Love Tomatoes” and “Square Foot Gardening” are some more suggestions, if you don’t already have ‘em.

Not 100 per cent sure about your intended terrain, but getting some kind of books on laying stone walls (particularly, laying them dry for boundaries and the like; or for that matter, laying them to build the house or components thereof) might be a good idea as well. :’)

Someone already cautioned about buying land from a friend. Real estate does bring out the worst in people (even worse than Demwit partisan politics in an election year). Get everything in writing after talking it over thoroughly.

Someone already suggested guns and ammo, also a good call.

Block and tackle or powered winch (for moving lots of things which will need to be moved, such as trees you cut down, rocks, etc). My dad used to pick up very handy old-style tools at the big used-to-be-Amish fleamarket in Shipshewana, but since you’re in Indiana, I’m sure you know about that.

Hunting is good there. Fishing too.
I think we are going to continue to shelter in place here until I have the utilities in place and have at least a travel trailer in place.
Reduce reuse and simplify. Save as much as I can and go at it hard as soon as the basics are in place.

My wife agreed with this after she read the thread. She likes the idea of children born in a hospital covered by insurance too so it looks like I need to get on that project first.

Gave it a little more thought, sounds like you’ve got just about all of the bases covered. But, communications. Cell reception. Availability of internet - via dish?

Other means of communication, shortwave?

They’ll matter.

Soil - red clay? Growing a decent garden in it is an acquired skill, ask your friends from whom you’re buying the land. Acidic usually, so lime, compost to break it up, maybe even a little sand. It’ll bake hard as a rock in the summer. There’s a reason so much brick is manufactured in the south, and that it’s red.

Also, tornadoes are different in the south. Smaller, less frequent than midwest, but much more likely to occur at night. Shelter arrangements for that until you have a solid structure, and a means of getting advance warning. Those little hand-crank/solar weather radios are cheap.

Most people will be better off staying put, but it sounds as if you and your wife are well equipped, psychologically and skills-wise, to make a go of it.

Good luck.

We had a lawyer do all the contracts and recorded it at the assessors office. I do agree money tends to bring out the worst but I'm confident with the person, terms and conditions.

Got the gun thing covered.

Shipshewana, I'd forgotten all about the big flea market there, Thanks

You won’t have 10 years.

Only God will save from anything to anything Good.

Being in a rural area can buy some time for more prayer; preparation for whatever else is coming; ministering to refugees etc.

Even a small one room shack is better than a tent after about a week.

Maybe it's just me - or that I live and have camped Florida - but a one room shack is better than a tent after one day...

The world will endure until God is ready to do away with it and create a new one.

Do I believe that the Biblical literal Armageddon will be over within 10 years.

Yes. I do.

Certainly within 12.

Tooooo many serious trend lines MUST peak before then.

Tooo many extremely diverse sources are talking about the Oligarchy staging various dramatic events toward such eventualities well before then . . . some beginning this year . . . evidently some beginning this summer or next.

The deliberated crashing and utter destruction of the dollar —to be replaced by the more overt global economic system and currency(-ies) is well under way already.

The deliberate shredding and destruction of the USA toward the more overt establishment of the global government is well under way already.

How many

HANDWRITING ON THE WALL DECLARATIONS

are you waiting for?

“So we better get some deet for the mosquitoes then.”

My hubby and I do not use Deet, as it is bad for your skin. Get some Neutragena After Bath oil...sesame seed formula. Mix half and half with rubbing alcohol and put in a spray bottle. Spray just lightly on skin in the mornings and it will last all day. Keeps mosquitoes, no-seeims, and chiggers away! :)

Admire your spirit. Be sure to check into cost of getting electric, water, and septic in. You might think about getting a house trailer on your property and not plan on a tent for more than a week. Being out in the woods you need to think of bears and such. You would be safer in a trailer until you can get your home built. :)
