Long Alaska day too much for campers from Outside
Anchorage Daily News ^ | JAMES HALPIN

The midnight twilight turned out to be too much for a couple of out-of-state visitors who wanted to be rescued after spending a single night in the Bush this month, Alaska State Troopers said Wednesday.

Troopers say they got a report of an emergency locator beacon registered to Washington, D.C., resident William Calomiris, 27, that was activated near Pungokepuk Lake, 20 miles northeast of Twin Hills, about 8:30 p.m. July 1. An air taxi service had dropped him and Adam Grunstra, also 27, of Bethesda, Md., off at the lake on June 30 for a seven-day stay, troopers said.

Troopers alerted the Alaska Air National Guard, the U.S. Coast Guard and then diverted their own Dillingham-based floatplane that was in the area to head to the scene and check things out.

"Calomiris and Grunstra claimed that they had been sunburned,"

I can't help but see this as as to how just don't "get it" when it comes to Alaska. It is exactly these types of uninformed, star-gazing, navel-picking, tree-hugging dingbats that will argue until they are blue in the face that there should be no drilling in ANWR, no mining, and no more pipelines. If more of these types of digbats would just spend a FULL WEEK in the wilderness they would realize it is big enough, stable enough, and more than capable of sustaining both wildlife and economic development.

These guys are dorkier than me. Even I know about Alaska having long long days at this time of year. They were probably screaming for their mommies to rub the calomine lotion on their backs.

"William Calomiris, 27 and his partner Adam Grunstra, also 27, had a hissy fight in the wilderness and called off their engagement..."

Fixed for the sake of clarity...

LOL! Do they have golf courses there? If I could handle the mosquitoes it would be golf 12 hours a day.

These girly boys went back to DC to be near their mommies. What loons.

Agreed. I guarantee these were enviro-weenies hoping to become “one with nature”.

If they would have left them there for the bears, they would have become “one with nature” for sure!

Liberals trying to survive in Palin country - laughable.
Dear Mr. Letterman, you are cordially invited to spend a weekend of camping in Alaska, Regards Sarah.:)

“I hope they are sent a bill for their frivolous use of the beacon.”

...I think we’re going to see more billing for that sort of thing in the future...New Hampshire already has a “Negligent Hiker Law” where they bill you for costs...if you don’t pay they revoke your drivers license.

I get the distinct impression that neither of these two men have spent much time camping in the wilderness. Even a little bit of research would have told them what to expect and whether or not they were experienced enough for that kind of trip. I don’t claim to be Jeremiah Johnson, but even I know a week in the Alaskan wilderness is going to be roughing it a bit - especially for two guys who hail from the D.C. Metro Area.*

* I am, of course, assuming both men are city-slicker types, and not transplanted mountain men.

Just saw the movie last night on cable. Had to laugh when I saw him shooting the .22 rifle. So, he brought down a moose with 5 rounds? Damn fine shootin, there dude!
