Thousands of Irish Catholics have flocked this week to a County Limerick church to pray at the stump of a recently cut willow that many observers say, has the silhouette of the Virgin Mary.

>

The workman who made the cut, Anthony Reddin, said he doesn't see the Virgin Mary.

"I see it as the grain of a tree myself," he said.

That is downright offensive. God did not make His Mother look like a tree stump.

“Maybe some people just need some tangible proofs for their faith.”

If you need tangible proof, then it doesn’t say much about your faith, the definition being “Believing without seeing.”

Hebrews 11:1 - “Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see.”

Sorry, that may have come out like an attack on you.

I should have said, “If one needs tangible proof, then it doesn’t say much about one’s faith ...”

The stump bears a strong resemblance to St. SlamMan.

Son of a gun, the wife and I drove through Limerick, aka Stab City, in May, and we didn’t see this? I’m mortified. (Incidentally there was a huge anti-gang violence march going on in the town at the time. Although driving through Limerick, it appeared peaceful enough.)

"priests"

Back in fifties, a Wisconsin woman name Ann Van Hoof of Necedah, Wisconsin claimed to have seen the Virgin Mary. The incident garnered national publicity. I remember one of my priests during a church sermon calling Mrs. Van Hoof deranged.

"If this isn’t paganism, what is?"

This.

(More specifically, idolatry.)
