Need some good, local places in Las Vegas

Greetings!

An acquaintance of mine is going to be going to Las Vegas with a group of friends for the first time. I was stationed there from 84-94, and have been back once or twice since then. I told her that the best places in Las Vegas are the places that aren't on the strip. Not the big houses, but the mom and pop places out there.

Now, I need recommendations from the folks on scene. Food, shows, places to go, things to see and do - off the beaten track and away from all the big touristy stuff.

Heck stop at a seedy motel and pretend its the place just as a joke. Just for the look on their faces.

Look at yelp.com for Las Vegas. The best local places are off the Strip, and will require a car rental.

We went for the first time back in February. We stayed on the strip at New York, New York. Prices were good back then and I imagine even better now.

So glad we stayed on the strip, but I heard the Fremont area is much cheaper and was told the Golden Nugget is nice. I can tell you one thing, the drinks and food are much cheaper in Fremont. That said I wouldn't trade the strip experience. The buffet at the Bellagio is expensive at $30, but what a food extravaganza! Real gourmet and many varities of foods from all over the world. There is a lot to see for free in Vegas.

For dinner, the best steakhouse in town used to be at Binion’s Horseshoe.

The place in the basement - yes! We used to get off duty on Friday nights, go back to the barracks and shower and change and go there. It got to the point where the wait staff recognized us (a group of ten jet engine mechanics is hard to forget) and put us in a dining room. It was always awesome. I'm glad it's still around (even if it's upstairs in the old Mint now). They were always good to us GIs.

Make them stay in a fleabag inn with the prostitutes and drug addicts

LOL! This is a group of Special Agents and their spouses - that could be interesting to do, as long as they don't come back looking for me :)

Besides which - the Sand Dunes is long gone. Used to be on LV Blvd, right across the street from where the Mirage is now, just down from the volcano. My ex-wife used to work there. Not that she was an addict or a hooker, mind you. LOL

lol. If they need to come to Dallas I’ll find the Anchor Motel number where they can pay monthly or hourly.

Sorry, it really was a stupid joke but my intentions were honora.... okay a bit cruel actually =o)
