They did have some reporters who seemed a bit favorable to the Axis but they usually tried to hide it. Herbert L Mathews I think was the name of one.

Oh and this story is uncredited, I wonder why.

Interestingly, the Wiki doesn’t mention the WW2 stuff

My grandfathers two brothers, when they arrived in New York from Germany in 1936, were utterly floored by how many Americans in the city supported Hitler.

That changed the farther west they went, away from the eastern media influence.

"The real economy recovered after the war"

Sure, but no thanks to Roosevelt's Depression era economic policies!

Seems to me there's a fairly recent book out discussing just this subject -- why FDR's economics failed and what actually caused the post-war recovery. I suspect much credit goes to a resurgence of Conservative Republican values after so many years of Democrat foolishness. ;-)

I think that book flatly said something about the depression ending with the beating of FDR’s heart

"I did not know how much Nazi vocabulary had been accepted by the Americans of the time. My great-grandparents each had, thanks to the attention to detail of their captors, Extermination Dates (Vernichtungsdaten). I am still gasping that the New York Times used such verbiage."

Over the past year Homer has posted a number of articles which strongly suggest that war in Euorpe would change the Nazi policy towards Jews from "expulsion" to "extermination." Franklin Roosevelt was fully aware of this, resulting in his desperate but less-than-successful efforts to actually purchase release of Jews from Germany.

Roosevelt's efforts to prepare for war were strongly opposed by Northern Isolationist Republicans, and strongly supported by Southern Conservative Democrats. Those Southern Democrats, however, just as strongly opposed increasing the quota of Jews allowed to immigrate to the US.

When you consider what FDR was up against, politically & otherwise, it's amazing what he accomplished.

Re the war and saving Europe and ridding it of Hitler, how right you are. As for the Jews, I will only say G-d Bless The Queen or I would not exist. America was sorely lacking in helping my family escape the Nazis. I say that as a very patriotic American.

"America was sorely lacking in helping my family escape the Nazis."

You're right. There's no sugar-coating what America was in 1939, and for many years after.

However, at least some of the criticism of Franklin Roosevelt on this is not fair or accurate. He did more than he's usually given credit for.

If you are interested in the subject, I highly recommend:
