I was thinking I’d be Beaker or the Swedish Chef. As long as I’m not Miss Piggy!

Heh....Tropical Storm Alex...

Looks like it’ll cool off a little for next week but I guess I should make a stab at some outdoor work in the heat today.

Great new rumor: “ http://www.theonering.net/torwp/2010/06/25/37261-peter-jackson-in-negotiations-for-the-hobbit/ “ Peter Jackson in negotiations for ‘The Hobbit’

I hope Peter will direct the final two! It would make a nice finish to the whole story.

Today's Saturday Night Gun Pron starts out with my discovery of what be my "gadget of the year" winner. And it has a ton of uses beyond gunsmithing.

This is the SecurityMan flexible inspection TV camera with wireless remote LCD screen.

In this case, we're seeing a dramatic reenactment of finding the detent plunger from my HK USC after its too-powerful spring launched it into the disaster area called my basement.

Normally, I would shift all the piles of carp from one spot to another until I found the part. When I found the part, the frap stayed in its new location, forming a new ecosystem to trap unwary components.

I heard the part hit cardboard, and had a general idea of where to start looking.

Here's how that little nook and cranny looked on the monitor, which can be attached to the back of the camera unit, or used wirelessly.

Believe it or not, the main reason I spent $190 was to help me with chores around the house. Holding it at arm's length, I was able to peek inside gutters to see if they were clogged. I learned that it's best to do this on a cloudy day so the camera isn't faked out by the contrast between bright sunlight and deep shadows. Also, it's very easy to develop vertigo. Not fun, even if I'm not risking falling off a ladder.

I also taped the camera to a pole pruner, and used it to check the rain gauge on the roof of the garden shed. The job really needs two people, one to watch the monitor, and the other to handle the fiberglass spaghetti wobbling around 20 feet into the air. Still, I got a clean bill of health from the rain gauge, where otherwise I'd have to get the ladder to climb onto the roof for a peek.

I rate this as a technology best-buy, although not as sexy as the new Iphone. With attachments for a hook, magnet, or mirror, and built-in lights in the camera head, you can peek in lots of places. Just use good judgment outdoors so the neighbors don't call the cops on you.

For the gun pron part of the report, I return again to the chicom mag pouches for the Beta Cmag and its clones. First, these pouches are $14, and not $24. Second, they have a lot of additional uses that may make these the best-bang-for-the-buck item of 2010.

Here you see the standard Korean clone pouch, along with the rather luxurious chicom versions. They're not really a rip-off, they're a better piece of gear.

Opened up, we see the drum magazine, as well as storage for "long stick" mags in the bigger tan and ACU pouches.

They will hold, a bit snugly, but vey quietly, eight P90 magazines or eight UMP mags. These "long stick" magazines are notoriously hard to carry, which is probably why "Stargate SG1" never showed where that next P90 magazine came from.

These are big pouches, but with MOLLE fasteners or a shoulder strap, you can carry 400 rounds of 5.7mm, or 200 rounds of .45ACP. They will also weigh a ton, as will the loaded 5.56mm drum, which weighs 5 pounds without the pouch.

These big pouches are also ideal for building a bug-out vest, although they're hugh. Plenty of room for oversized stuff than can't be stored on the vest any other way.

Finally, a quick look at my HK UMC project. I now have the parts I need, and here's a look at the major pieces assembled the first time for a fit test.

At this point, I've opened up the magazine opening in the upper receiver to accept the double-stack mag, and stripped the live FA lower prior to putting in the semi-only parts, and permanently blocking off where the FA parts went.

The dummy can takes away part of the stigma of living in a non-NFA friendly state.

The last part of the job involves the lower receiver, and fighting the English translation of the German armorer's manual. I probably could do better in the original German, because the English terms someone used for some of the parts, and procedures, read like they were just run through Babelfish. They should at least have a real live gunsmith proofread it.

What they called "the catch" is really the full auto sear, and had to be excised, and its space in the lower permanently blocked off. "The slide" is really the cam that the selector switch uses to give safe, fire, and full auto modes. It is being replaced by the proper "safe-fire" cam. Having a live full-auto lower just means a lot of work to make it a "safe" semi-only lower with the ability to use the double-stack mags. There would be so much other work needed to be done to the upper receiver and bolt that a conversion to full auto (which could only be sold to cops and the goobermint) would be a nightmare. Better just import the real thing from H&K.

One last gripe about this manual concerns a large, heavy-duty piece of steel in the back of the FA lower. This part is shown in pictures and diagrams in the manual, but does not have a part number, and is never identified.

After much thinking, I realized it was a disassembly safety. If you're enough of a moron, and strong as an ox, to open the back of the weapon with the bolt locked to the rear, and the mainspring compressed to the max, it will deflect that missile away from you, and maybe towards your buddy.

Still, it's a worthwhile item, but it's not installed on the civilian version because they have that area of the upper receiver blocked off so that another batch of full-auto parts can't fit or function.

Range test some day after I fight my way through the "armorer's manual", which does a great job of telling you how to take things apart, but not how to stack all the cams, sliders, and springs on an axle shaft to get it back together again.

Fortunately, I took apart the semiauto lower and put it back together to learn all of the tricks and schemes involved in reassembly. It's rather ingenious, if you have six hands to juggle all the parts to get them into the proper position.

True enough, that’s news alright. Hoping the production starts soon. We’re not getting any younger. :-).

The HK is looking good Win-Mag; very good indeed. Range report will be welcome.

I always got a chuckle out of the disassembly instructions that ended with: Reassemble in reverse order. At least the various forums with a bit of help of help from U-Tube have come together to show how the ‘re-assembly’ drill goes. Still, I frequently grumble putting the Mark II back together.
