I was wondering that, too.

Your basis for that statement?

There are approximately 85,000 people homeless at any one time for the entire state of Florida.

On the other hand...just in the New York City ALONE there are over 40,000 on any given day.

Homeless and deranged people I would be willing to speculate they probably don’t care very much about the weather.

You may be right. Do seem to be a lot around here, but that’s the problem with anecdotal evidence.

OTOH, the local shelter is two blocks from my office.

And her siblings are going to be scarred for life. She was walking home with a twin brother and 10 year old sister, and had a squabble about something, so little Somer ran ahead of the others.

They can't blame themselves, and likely, in the future, with help, probably won't. I can attest to that fact, because when I was 6, a friend who lived down the street from us was visiting with her 3 yr. old sister. The three of us went to the corner to get them across the street, under the eye of my father, who was on the roof of our house, which was on that corner, and the 3 yr. old broke away from our hands and ran into the street. A drunk driver came around the corner, and hit her, killing her. My Daddy jumped off the roof and went to her immediately, but it was too late to do anything for her.

I don't remember anything about the actual accident, and have a vague memory of having to leave my first grade classroom, go up to the courthouse, and sit around a big table, to answer questions from a bunch of men. I'm guessing it was a Grand Jury, but I don't remember anything else about the tragedy. I don't remember feeling guilty, because she might have done the same to one of her older siblings, as well, but there was nothing we could do about her actions at the time. I apparently didn't need, nor do I remember getting any counseling, but I guess we had enough people telling us that it wasn't our fault, and that we couldn't have done anything different, that we didn't need it.

That was 50 years ago this year, and the reason I remember that so well, was because my mother mentioned it from time to time. She was pregnant with her 8th child, and because of the shock, went into labor, and my sister was born the next day. That sister turns 50 next month.

But I do pray for her siblings, and her parents, and hope justice is meted out swiftly and surely for the animal who killed little Somer.

Let’s assume your numbers are accurate.

Population NYC 8.3M, 40,000 homeless.

Population FL 18.3M, 85,000 homeless.

Doesn’t seem particularly disproportionate to me.

Identity has not yet been confirmed. LE is being very tight-lipped on this; still have not confirmed sex of child in latest news conference with; have not yet confirmed that it is Somer.

I dont know if the schools in Florida have the same regs but our school district use to have children walk to school (or parents take them, or ride a bike) if they lived within 2 miles of the school.

We stopped that practice about 8 years back and now all ride buses unless they live within a block of the school.

I could not agree more. First off, we need to have laws that keep predators off the streets forever. There is just no way to be sure they are ever safe for the public at large.
Second, we need to stop classifying an 18 year old who has consensual sex with his girlfriend who happens to be more than 2 years younger than he is, as a sex offender. It’s not close to the same thing.

You just proved my point.

There is not statistical relevance to your point about the climate.

Using ratios New York City is on par with Florida in regard to how many homeless there are. New York winters are not like Florida’s.

BTW...New York State has about 19 million people and about 170,000 homeless...basically 2:1 to Florida so much for your ridiculous speculation.

Our country is on fire folks...we should all do a better job getting the truth and facts out there as opposed to knee jerk reactions that further mis-truths.

I need to adjust my comment. CA has 170,000 homeless...the numbers for New York vary greatly however in all cases they have more homeless than Florida does.

Either way the climate argument is off base and not accurate.

I don’t disagree about the lack of god in their lives...however I don’t believe a belief in god would stop someone this sick from being this sick...

This was a bit different though. Piecing together from various reports, the little girl had some sort of argument with another child who was with them (possibly her twin brother, though I haven’t seen any references to a twin since yesterday), and the older sister yelled at her to stop fighting. That’s when the little girl ran away from the others.

In the situation you described, obviously no one took any action that caused the child to run into the street, and it happened to fast for anyone to run out and get him before he got hit. It sounds like in Somer’s case, the older sister not only triggered the run-off, but also didn’t try to go after her sister (quite likely because, at least according to some reports yesterday, the 10 year old was also escorting the younger girl’s twin brother). I just think she’s going to be really haunted by both “I shouldn’t have yelled at her”, and “I should have run after her”. If the little girl was fighting with was her twin brother, he’s going to have some big psychological challenges ahead to, both felling responsible for the fight (whether he really was or not) and just because of the very strong bond twins usually have.
