SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (AP) -- The family of an 8-year-old boy who fatally shot himself at a gun show in western Massachusetts say the Uzi submachine gun jammed twice before he lost control of the weapon and fired into his head.

The family of Christopher Bizilj (bah-SEEL') of Ashford, Conn., says in a civil lawsuit filed Friday that a 15-year-old instructor who cleared the gun and handed it back to the victim failed to provide proper guidance.....

I know everyone is saying it’s the Dad’s fault, but I had no clue about the inability to control this weapon before this case. I could see myself thinking it would be cool to let my girls do it.

I would be the stupid mother blamed here on FR when I trusted the owner of the gun to put an age limit on things.

I wouldn’t sue, though. I would have probably had a heart attack at the moment it happened.

Don’t know why the fact that the gun jammed twice before firing is of any impact to the story. Obviously the 15 year old was successful in clearing the jam. Unfortunately for the little one the weapon functioned properly. An eight year old should be introduce to a .22 long rifle first. I can’t see introducing a kid to a pistol or submachinegun at all. Seriously, “you’ll shoot your eye out kid”.

It is ALSO a good idea, when shooting full autos, to start with just 2 cartridges in the magazine, at first, to get a “feel” for the recoil, and rate of fire. Then go to three, then 4 or 5, and 8 or 10, etc. Had they done THAT, the boy would now PROBABLY be alive, because it would have been apparent after the 2 shots fired, that is was too much gun for him, at that age.

It's a shame what happened to that kid but if I'm on the jury I vote “no money”.Where there are firearms there's *always* at least a small chance of an accident.

Wow. Cute kid..I wonder what a lawsuit will accomplish.

You mean apart from the new BMW for the lawyer's 16 year old daughter?

It was not a gunshow. It’s the diffence between going to a carshow and actually taking part in a NASCAR race.

The chain of firearm knowledge (i.e., using the term “backfire” vs. kickback or recoil) went from the police Lt. down to the lowly AP writer who wrote the article. Now, which one of these two would you consider to be the idiot?

A gun that jams twice in a row needs to be broken down and repaired. Something is wrong, even if it's the handler's fault.
