President Obama on Tuesday said he is open to working with Republicans on a health care reform deal but said he is unwilling to start the legislative process over from scratch, instead arguing that on health care and much of his agenda the GOP minority is going to have to accept some ideas it does not like.
In an abbreviated, unannounced press conference his first since July Mr. Obama told reporters in the White House briefing room that he was willing to listen to Republican ideas and that he's already taken steps by proposing cooperation on nuclear energy and expanded drilling for oil and gas. But the president said bipartisanship will require Republicans to swallow some bitter pills.
On health care in particular, Mr. Obama said he will accept ideas at the upcoming half-day summit later this month but doesn't want to scrap the months of negotiations, hearings and deals that have already produced bills that passed the House and Senate late last year.

FUBO!
Landslide, 2010!
Methinks he’ll be the one swallowing bitter pills the rest of the year. People are onto him for the liar that he is.
I have two plans. One is to skin you alive and the other is to boil you in oil. However, in the spirit of bipartisanship, I’m willing to let you choose between the plans. And I’m willing to listen to your ideas, so long as the basic framework of skinning you alive or boiling you in oil remains intact.
FUBO!
After November, ZER0, after November,
you’ll be singing a different tune.
No starting over= NO DEAL!
And here it is, the crux of why liberals are who they are:
But the president said bipartisanship will require Republicans to swallow some bitter pills.
Interesting how he didn’t mention that democrats might have to “swallow some bitter pills”. The bill will not be “bi-partisan” if they don’t. As alwahys, democrats define “bi-partisanship” as “Republicans do it our way”.
This whole thing is a sham and we have to hope the republicans see through it.
Good analogy!!! Rat bastard commie pig 0bozo the usurper acting in a “bi-partisan” sham....or scam...or whatever!
Sounds like a real leader! ;-(
This is nothing but a Chicago political move to attempt to paint the R's as being "Dr. No." Too late for that now! The citizenry already has its opinion.
Only a naive person who never ran a business, dealt with a board of directors, or fellow officers of a company, or met a payroll can think like that. True leaders, whatever their field, don't find it necessary or prudent to use such tactics.
The PEOPLE will not stand for those ideas, either.
I wonder why he thinks Republicans should have any interest in bailing out a bill that has no chance to pass. On what planet does that constitute reasonable bipartisanship? What if George Bush had demanded Democrats come to a meeting to save Social Security reform after Republicans killed it? What would Obama-types have said? Almost certainly something like, “Your bill, your problem.”
Tennessee has joined several other states in trying to pass a Health Care Freedom Act. NO COLAs for granny, retired Military or retired fed employees. BIG NEW fees for Tricare for Life retired over 65 Military's secondary health ins. (DOD bill already passed, delayed but goes into effect 2011)
New Dem mantra: Woof, woof eat dog food granny....ala let them eat cake.
Hearings? I don't remember there being any congressional hearings. It was all done back room, except for a couple of open committee markup meetings when they shouted down Senator Kyl.
Then Republicans should just REJECT his offer, its silly to talk about modifying a dead bill built on a foundation of crap.
If you won’t scrap the crap and start over, there is no reason wasting everyones time.
This is kinda like having the National League and American League meeting to discuss having the “DH” rule in the National League. No one is going to agree on any change. It might be entertaining to watch...but I suspect that it’ll end with nothing accomplished.
My good friend who is also a libertarian made a point to me that I’ve been wondering about. The vast majority of “heath care reform” is socialist...but making sure that insurance companies are not denying coverage to people who are paying them IS libertarian, no?
I think there may be some room for some “reform” that ensures that the insurance companies respect their obligations.
One point that I’m conflicted on is the pre-existing condition stuff...I think it cannot be argued that it is conservative or libertarian to force insurance companies to cover pre-existing conditions. But I know a lady in her fifties with diabetes who was shafted by a previous employer and whos current employer won’t offer her insurance. She has no hope of being able to afford getting a policy. She is a staunch conservative and totally against health care reform by the way.
I don’t know what the answer to the pre-existing condition question is, or if there is one at all.
Hilarious. He's either a very stupid man or he thinks we are.
He’s either a very stupid man or he thinks we are.
Actually, he knows that “we” (the conservatives) aren’t in political control of the RINOs. In that regard, he is intelligent.
Yet the RINOs meekly accepted his invitation after a tough talking letter yesterday. Didn’t see that coming
